Renowned Photographer Zhang Kunkun Discusses Changes and Continuity in the Video Era

Chongqing - On October 10, Zhang Kunkun, a renowned photographer, independent short film director, and Visual Chongqing contract photographer, shared his insights on adapting to the fast-paced "video era" while maintaining artistic integrity. Invited by the Chongqing Youth Imaging Project, Zhang spoke at the Niccolo Lectures event held at the Niccolo Chongqing Hotel, offering attendees a captivating blend of visual artistry and creative ideas.

The "Capture Moments of Encounter" event highlighted the seven-year journey of the "I Love Chongqing: A Day in the Life" citizen photography campaign, now in its eighth year. The theme also symbolized the unexpected connections between photographers and the city's landscapes.

A Chongqing-based artist, Zhang has captured the city's charm since 2001. His work, known for its unique visual language, has been featured in prestigious exhibitions like the National Photography Art Exhibition and China National Geographic's various showcases. His photography, often exploring Chongqing’s lesser-known "hidden gems," has garnered millions of online likes, turning once-obscure locations into popular social media landmarks.

While sharing, Zhang explored the video industry's evolution and visual media's enduring role. He shared several of his creative video projects, such as "The Passion of the Harvest",  and "From Origins to Journey", offering the audience a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes process of his work—from conceptualization and scene setup to filming techniques and post-production.

Zhang also discussed the delicate balance between artistic self-expression and meeting the demands of social media algorithms. Drawing from his own experiences, he provided practical advice on navigating the evolving world of video production while staying true to one's creative vision.

In addition to Zhang's presentation, the event honored the top 10 creators from the Chongqing Youth Imaging Project and showcased award-winning works in a virtual exhibition. These pieces captured the city's beauty through light and shadow—from the first rays of dawn on the river to the dazzling city lights at night—demonstrating Chongqing's vibrant spirit and depth to the world.
