Chongqing Introduces ‘On-Demand Buses’, a New Era of Public Transportation

Chongqing - To redefine public transportation, Chongqing has launched its innovative "on-demand bus" service, allowing residents to hail a bus as easily as booking a ride-hailing service. With just a few taps on a smartphone app, commuters can now enjoy the convenience of a personalized bus service that picks them up and drops them off at their desired locations, all for a flat fare of just 2 yuan(about $0.28).

Gone are the days of waiting at bus stops for fixed-route buses. Chongqing's on-demand buses operate within designated service zones but do not follow fixed routes. Instead, they dynamically adjust their paths based on real-time passenger demand, ensuring efficient and flexible service. This model reduces wait times and optimizes vehicle and route resources, covering a broader area with fewer buses.

Since its launch in early 2024, the service has quickly gained popularity among residents. Ms. Qin, a commuter from Shapingba District, shared her experience, "It's like hailing a taxi, but even more affordable. I can save over ten minutes on my commute, and the bus is always there when I need it."

The on-demand bus system streamlines operations through advanced technology. Passengers book rides via a mobile app that uses smart algorithms to calculate the most efficient routes based on passenger locations, destinations, and real-time traffic conditions. Drivers receive navigation instructions through onboard tablets, ensuring smooth pickups and drop-offs.

"The system automatically plans the best route for us, so we don't have to worry about navigation," said Yang Rui, a Route 3560 driver who serves the Xiangjiagang industrial area. "It's efficient and saves a lot of time."

Chongqing operates four on-demand bus routes in Beibei District, Shapingba District, and the Chongqing High-Tech Zone. These routes serve over 500,000 passengers and complete more than 696,100 trips. They are strategically designed to address gaps in traditional public transportation, particularly in areas with complex terrain or low passenger density.

"We follow the needs of the people," said Cao Rongxiao, head of operations at Chongqing Public Transport Group. "Wherever there's demand, we bring the service."

The service is constantly evolving based on user feedback. For example, Route 3236 in the Chongqing High-Tech Zone has seen several upgrades, including a reduction in service area to improve response times and a simplified fare structure offering a flat rate of 2 yuan. Additionally, the service now accepts both online payments and traditional transit card payments, making it more accessible to all age groups.

Chongqing's On-Demand Buses are part of a broader effort to enhance public transportation. Other innovative services include "Alley Buses" for narrow streets, "Market Shuttles" for grocery shopping, and "Flower-Viewing Buses" for scenic tours, all aimed at meeting the diverse needs of residents.

Chongqing's public transport authorities plan to expand and refine the On-Demand Bus service further, integrating it into a multi-layered transit network that includes express, mainline, branch, and micro-routes. By embracing digital innovation and community-driven solutions, Chongqing is setting a new standard for urban mobility, ensuring that public transportation is not only efficient but also responsive to the needs of its citizens.
