Chongqing - China’s annual “Two Sessions” concluded in Beijing, with lawmakers approving the Government Work Report and the outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) for national economic and social development. Anthony Preston, British Consul General, Chongqing, shared his views on the outcomes and their implications for China–UK cooperation.
He highlighted topics discussed during the sessions, including decarbonization, net zero, and the development of modern and professional services. Preston noted Chongqing’s role as a major automobile manufacturing center and pointed to Changan Automobile’s research and development center in Birmingham as an example of China–UK collaboration. He also emphasized the city’s ambitions in financial and professional services, environmental protection and biodiversity, and the importance of education and people-to-people exchanges. Reflecting on his long-standing connection to Chongqing, he noted the city’s transformation since his first visit in 2000 and its growing role in strategic projects such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Land-Sea Corridor into Southeast Asia and beyond.
