New Chongqing in Focus: Film, AI and Cultural Vitality

Chongqing — The two-day media tour "Confidence in Development — New Chongqing Through the Lens" concluded with photojournalists from across China exploring Chongqing’s intelligent manufacturing, film technology, and cultural vitality.

In Yongchuan District, participants visited the city's fast-growing innovation and film production sectors. At Dawa Imaging Technology, home to one of China's largest virtual production studios, a massive LED screen rendered digital environments in real time, allowing complex scenes to be filmed in a controlled setting. The facility has supported more than 140 film and television projects and is building an integrated ecosystem combining technology, talent, and production services.

Li Zhe, executive deputy editor-in-chief of Luoyang Evening News, said the visit reshaped his understanding of film production.

“Scenes like historical settings are common in cities such as Luoyang, Xi’an, or Beijing, but seeing them recreated in a studio like this in Yongchuan is impressive,” Li said. “In the past, productions often had to travel to multiple locations or rely on large film sets. Now, with this kind of technology, many challenges can be solved within a single studio, significantly reducing costs and dependence on weather conditions.”

The group also visited Chongqing Kankan Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd., an AI-driven enterprise specializing in intelligent visual systems. The company operates a large-scale industrial base integrating research and development with manufacturing in areas such as smart cockpits, intelligent perception, and two-wheeled vehicle systems, reflecting Chongqing’s growing presence in AI-powered industries.

In the afternoon, the itinerary shifted to local culture. At Tea Mountain and Bamboo Sea National Forest Park, the origin of Yongchuan Xiuya tea, participants experienced the region’s tea culture firsthand. Located at elevations of 800 to 1,000 meters and often surrounded by mist, the area provides ideal conditions for tea cultivation. Visitors sampled freshly brewed tea while observing bamboo forests and rolling tea plantations.

As night fell, the tour moved to Changshou District, where the Spring Fireworks Art Festival illuminated the sky above Changshou Lake. The combination of drones and fireworks created a stunning visual effect, with the display layered across the lake and surrounding hills.

"It was impressive to see drones and fireworks coordinated in this way," said Wang Huan, a reporter with Tangshan Labor Daily. "The display was truly spectacular. This trip to Chongqing has been well worth it."

In Chongqing's central urban area, the night continued with a drone light show along the Yangtze and Jialing rivers. More than 5,000 drones formed dynamic patterns in the sky, offering a visual interpretation of the city’s landscape and urban identity.

In recent years, Chongqing has leveraged urban renewal to strengthen its cultural and tourism appeal. Signature experiences such as drone light shows and immersive events have contributed to growing visitor numbers. Official data shows that in 2025, the city received more than 500 million domestic tourist visits and over 2 million inbound visits, with total tourism consumption exceeding 550 billion yuan.

The two-day tour gave participating photojournalists a panoramic view of Chongqing’s development — from advanced manufacturing and film technology to cultural experiences and tourism innovation. Through their lenses, the city emerges as an open inland hub, a livable urban center, and a growing center of intelligent manufacturing, reflecting strong momentum in high-quality development.
