From Coal Village to Green Waters: Liangfeng’s Transformation

Chongqing — Once a coal-mining subsidence area marked by cracked houses, land subsidence, and sparse vegetation, Liangfeng Village has undergone a remarkable transformation into a National Key Rural Tourism Village.

Located on the Chongqing–Guizhou border in Wansheng Economic Development Zone, Liangfeng is guided by the spirit of "Yu Gan Yu Xing," a local motto expressing the belief that perseverance and hard work lead to prosperity. Residents say that spirit has shaped the community's journey over many years.

Backed by Jiuguoqing Forest Park, the village has built its development around its ecological landscape. Since March 2017, it has welcomed more than 3 million visitors and generated over 600 million yuan (about US$84 million) in tourism revenue.

Since the launch of China's Rural Revitalization Strategy in 2017, Liangfeng has developed eco-tourism, recreational fishing and markets for locally produced agricultural specialties. Tourism has also encouraged the growth of homestays and other small businesses, creating new opportunities for local residents while preserving the area's natural environment.

The village's revival reflects a broader transformation in Wansheng, which has more than 180 years of coal mining history. Average annual disposable income in Liangfeng has risen from 6,000 yuan to 28,900 yuan, while the village collective economy now generates more than 1.5 million yuan in annual operating revenue.

Today, visitors come not only to enjoy the scenery but also to experience a community where rural revitalization is reflected in everyday life—from family-run businesses and local agricultural products to a growing tourism economy.
