Pinglu Canal Opens a New Maritime Gateway for Western China
As a key project of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor, the Pinglu Canal will add a new river-sea transport route to the existing rail-sea intermodal system, enabling goods from western China to reach the Beibu Gulf more efficiently and connect with ASEAN and global markets. After four years of construction, the Pinglu Canal is open to navigation on September 16. The canal is reshaping China’s logistics network from an east-west orientation to a north-south one, giving industries in western regions such as Chongqing and Sichuan new options to expand overseas while creating more opportunities for ASEAN products to enter western China.
How Can the Pinglu Canal Open Chongqing’s Gateway to the South?
The opening of the Pinglu Canal provides Chongqing with a new route to the sea through the south. Connecting the Xijiang River shipping route with the Beibu Gulf Port, the southbound channel offers Chongqing a shorter and more cost-efficient option to reach ASEAN markets. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership, bringing new opportunities for regional economic cooperation. After its opening, how will the Pinglu Canal complement the rail-sea intermodal transport system of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor? What new opportunities will it create for industrial development, and how will it help Chongqing expand its growth potential? In this episode, we will take a deep dive into these issues.
