ZXMOTO Sets Guinness World Record With 40.7 KM Motorcycle Ride on Water | Video

Chongqing - Zhang Xue, founder of Chinese motorcycle brand ZXMOTO, recently rode a modified motorcycle 40.74 kilometers across open water in his hometown of Mayang Miao Autonomous County, Huaihua, Hunan Province, setting a new Guinness World Records title and surpassing the previous record of 31.8 kilometers.

Zhang rode a specially modified MX450 motorcycle across a river, completing the challenge through multiple runs. The event drew local residents and motorcycle enthusiasts. Rescue boats and medical personnel were on standby to ensure safety. Guinness World Records officials verified the result and presented Zhang with a certificate.

The key to the challenge was modifying the motorcycle to travel across water, with adjustments to its structure, buoyancy, propulsion and handling systems.

Deng Liansong, an engineer with ZXMOTO, said the MX450 was fitted with special water-skimming equipment and waterproofed. The motorcycle accelerated on land before entering the water. Its rear wheel pushed water backward to propel it forward, while a front ski helped maintain stability and control direction, allowing it to travel long distances across the water.

The successful attempt also fulfilled a goal Zhang had first pursued 17 years ago.

In 2009, when he was 22, Zhang attempted to ride a simply modified motorcycle across water. He fell into the water on all four attempts, with his longest run reaching just 20 meters.

Reflecting on the experience, Zhang said, “I had strong faith that I could make it happen. Even if I failed, I would keep going without hesitation. I really enjoyed the process.” He added that trying things the team had never done before, or had yet to master, helped it grow and that the latest challenge had taught the team a great deal.

Completing the challenge in his hometown also held special significance for Zhang. Mayang is known for its dragon boat racing traditions. After the successful attempt, local residents celebrated with dragon boat performances and other festivities. Zhang said he chose Mayang for the record attempt to fulfill a dream in his hometown and introduce the area to a wider audience.

In the 17 years since his first attempt, Zhang has gone from a motorcycle repair apprentice to the founder of a motorcycle brand. In 2026, ZXMOTO made its debut in the WorldSSP class of the WorldSBK, finishing third in the manufacturers' standings.
