If a patient is undergoing an operation in Chongqing China, while his surgeon is conducting the operation abroad, could this be real?

Chongqing Jinshan Science & Technology (Group) Co., Ltd (Jinshan Technology) has developed a surgical robot to facilitate abdominal and thoracic surgeries using a minimally invasive approach, which also makes the remote surgery possible by enabling the doctor abroad to conduct operation on the patient in Chongqing.

The surgical robot has four interactive robotic arms, which assist the surgeon to conduct the operation. The arm in the middle is a high definition camera, and the two arms on both sides are for tools that hold objects and can also act as scalpels, scissors, suture needles, etc. The forth one is a spare robotic arm. 

“In practice, the surgical robot will provide an optimized operation proposal based on the patient’s x-ray beforehand. Assisted with a high definition view of the surgical site, the surgeon can instruct the robotic arms to conduct the operation through the computer console.” said Wang Jinshan, the chairman of Jinshan Technology. He also pointed out that the robotic surgical system had the benefits of less pain and blood loss, smaller and less noticeable scars and it saved one fourth of the time that the traditional minimally invasive surgery needs.

At present, only the da Vinci Surgical Robot of the US can apply such an abdominal and thoracic minimally invasive surgery. And it holds global monopoly. It will cost about RMB 30 million (USD 4.3 million) to introduce one set of da Vinci Surgical Robot, and even more than 100 thousand RMB (USD tens of thousands) for a patient to have a da Vinci Robotic surgery. While this “Made in Chongqing” surgical robot only cost one third of the price, which greatly reduced the surgery fee.

The surgical robot developed by Jinshan Technology will be put in clinical trial by the end of the year and hopefully put on the market next year. It will also show up in Smart China Expo from 23-25 August, 2018.
