Chongqing - British Council recently released White Paper on IELTS Performance for Test Takers Mainland China 2018. It shows candidates from the Chinese mainland have been making progress in their English skills in the past five years.

In the IELTS Academic test, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Hubei, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Beijing and Chongqing are grouped as the first level of the Chinese mainland. Also, it is the first time Chongqing has entered the first-level group.

Based on global IELTS test-takers’ data, the White Paper focuses on the 2017-2018 academic performance of IELTS test-takers in Mainland China. It also has compared their ability to listening, reading, writing and speaking between this year and former years.

Candidates in the Chinese mainland have made small progress in English skills in the past five years (2012-2017).  However, they are still relatively weak in speaking.

In terms of the IELTS Academic Test, their writing skills grow fastest despite the score for writing remains at the level of 6.0 points. Also, in this test, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Hubei, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Beijing and Chongqing have the best performance.

At the same time, there is also a slight increase in average speaking scores in IELTS General Training Test, the writing score of test-takers ascends to a higher level. Besides this, their improvement in writing ability is most obvious.

Meanwhile, the population of test-takers aged from 19 to 22 takes the largest proportion. Those under 18 years old have exceeded those aged from 23 to 25, thus becoming the second largest group.
