The section of Jialing River nearby Shuitu Town
By Keqiao Cheng, EDITOR
Located in Beibei District, Chongqing, Shuitu Town began to thrive in the middle of Qianlong reign (1736-1795), Qing Dynasty. Gradually, the town became an important dock in the downstream of Jialing River.
Meanwhile, it served as a main artery of water and land transport. As the old saying goes, “Shuitu Town accommodates hundreds of people in the daytime and thousands of lights at night”. That also proves its prosperity. Let alone people compare it to the “pearl” on the east bank of Jialing River now.
Doors of the old courtyard at Shuitu Town
An old courtyard stands in an alley in the town. The front door is imposing, and the characters on the lintel are hard to recognize.
White Fig in a circle inlaid with tiles
There are luxuriant and green plants in the backyard. Careful observation reveals that behind the White Fig trees, there used to be the character of “Fu” (blessing) on the wall. It is in a circle inlaid with tiles.
