LG Cup World Baduk Championship, one of the major international competitions, was the domestic Baduk championship in South Korea. The Chosun Ilbo, a major local newspaper, serves as the host, and LG Group as the sponsor. The host unit, in 1996, realized the trend of Go internationalization, and therefore, it founded the LG Cup. In the previous sessions, Chinese winners include Yu Bin, Gu Li, Kong Jie, Piao Wenyao, Jiang Weijie, Shi Yue, Tuo Jiaxi, Dang Yifei, and Xie Erhao. Gu Li, another player from Chongqing, took the crown in 2006 and 2009. He then becomes the winningest Chinese player in this competition.

As a new-generation Go player, Yang Dingxin, had a solid performance in the Cup. He beat such Japanese and South Korean masters as Iyama Yuta, Won Seong-jin, Kang Dongyun, and Shin Min-jun. Then he met his competitor Shi Yue who defeated four players including Fan Tingyu in the final. Consequently, the Cup became a battle between Chinese players.

Furthermore, based on the rules, Yang would win KRW 300 million (about RMB 1.8 million). And his rank would also go up to the 9th dan (a ranking system in Go). China’s Go community can, therefore, welcome a new 9th-dan player.
