Looking China Chongqing Tour Produces 10 Documentaries to Showcase City Charm

Chongqing- The presentation ceremony of 2019 Looking China Youth Film Project kicked off in Chongqing Daily News Group, April 24. Ten young directors from Italy, Spain, Slovakia, Palestine, and Poland work with their Chinese producers from Southwest University present the charm and prosperity of Chongqing through their lens. Giving a full play of the cultural program, they sought to create an understanding of "Moments, Seasons, Times” and tell the world Chinese stories from their perspectives.

The Looking China project has been successfully held for eight years. It aims not only to highlight the charm of China but also strengthen cross-cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. Last year was the “Looking China” project’s first coming to Chongqing and together with the students and staff at Southwest University, made remarkable achievements. 

Messages at the presentation ceremony

Wen Tao, Vice President at Southwest University, said that after visiting the historical and cultural city of Chongqing in person, these foreign young directors created 10 high-quality documentaries that can fully display Chinese culture and promote the international spread of Chinese culture.

Huang Zhenwei, Deputy Director of Chongqing Municipal People’s Government’s Office of Information, picked up for keywords-connection, emotion, interaction, and discovery to highlight Looking China Chongqing Tour.

Gao Feng, Executive Dean of Academy for International Communication of Chinese Culture, said, “This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. In the past 70 years, the Chinese people have written a chapter of the era of national development with hard work. I hope that these ten short films produced by foreign youth directors will provide the world with a new perspective on China.”

"Chongqing, its stories, landscapes, traditions, architecture, atmosphere, and food all have definitely conquered me," said University of Macerata Professor Francesco Cardinali. After the presentation ceremony, Professor Cardinali took an exclusive interview of iChongqing to share his views on Looking China program and the gains of students.

Young directors and their works

Mohammed Almughanni from Gaza - Palestine with Future and on, a slice of life of the artist Fu Yuxiang, a sensible mix between the timeline of an aliens sculpture and his family life.

Barbara Di Giuseppe from Italy with Chase, that shows us the astonishing Dragon Dance of Liang mountain with fireworks and tells its importance for the people of Tongliang

Kinga Gorak from Poland with Hello Chongqing, an original “time travel” story from traditional low-tech life to the reality of intelligent robot and A.I. technology in Beibei area.

Carina Diana Holhos from Italy with Coexistence, a story about the evolution of Chongqing architecture through the ancient and cultural role of French Naval Barracks.

Claudia Mastroroberto from Italy with Platform 3, an intimate story of workers and traveler of the Chengdu-Chongqing Railway, their dreams, and their life

Angels Melange from Spain with Ink and Stone, an intense story inside the walls of the ancient village of JinGang Bei and its atmosphere, told from the eyes of some artists related to the place

Sona Notova from Slovakia with Rice-ing Sun, that shows the growth and the importance of rice in Chinese culture and life, from the hard work in the fields to the making of noddles

Matus Oparty from Slovakia with Brewing new life, an intimate and cool story about Ben and his life in China, where he finds love and success as a beer man.

Saverio Serini from Italy with Spic-it-y, about the famous Chongqing pepper and the hot story of an Italian businessman that promote the spicy side of China all over the world.

Andrea Vallero from Italy with Jiaotong Teahouse that will make you feel the unique atmosphere of this very special Chongqing teahouse.
