Chongqing - Chocolate is delicious, and Belgium is perhaps one of the countries in the world most famous for delightful chocolate. iChongqing journalist found a Belgian pavilion in the International Exhibition Area on the 6th Western China Tourism Industry Expo, held in Chongqing on June 21st-23th. It was set up by a company called Choclito, who make handmade Belgian chocolate out of Chengdu. However, they make their chocolate with a twist. You can get regular shaped pieces in gift boxes, but they also make lollipop-shaped chocolates, a pair of high-heeled shoes and, perhaps most interestingly, Mahjong tiles with Chines Baijiu inside.
The Belgian pavilion is small, but don't let the size fool you. They have had a steady stream of visitors and lots of interest in their chocolate products. They sell chocolate bars as well as gift boxes and can customize logos on them for company gifts for clients or a loved one. The company is run by Tom and his wifi Lili, who added their names to the world chocolate to create Choclito. It also just happens that the Chinese word for chocolate (巧克力 qiao ke li) sounds very similar to "Choclito" or, more specifically "Chocli."
Tom was kind enough to give me an introduction to the products they offer through their pavilion and their shop.
"We have a chocolate bar, with different flavors, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and white chocolate. We have the nine-piece gift box with filling and the sixteen-piece box, which is perfect to give to people as a gift, very popular," explained Tom, just as my eyes caught the smaller chocolate pieces lying beside them. "We also try to combine Belgian chocolate with Chinese culture, so that's the reason why we make the mahjong tiles... and to make them more special, we can also fill them with Baijiu".
You can even have a chocolate lollipop made with a photo on top, printed with special colorful cocoa butter made from all natural materials and Choclito holds workshops in Chengdu for teaching how to make chocolate.
If you go back ten years, you'd find that Chocolate wasn't necessarily a trendy treat in China. However, Tom wants to change that. "We have to educate them more on Chocolate, because before they thought it was only for Valentine's day, but now there is Teacher's Day, Women's Day, and because you can add a photo, it is perfect for a gift".
