International Education: Part of Chongqing's Development

By MIKKEL LARSEN|Aug 05,2019

As Chongqing’s Liangjiang New District sees more and more overseas companies being established there, bringing with them foreign workers and their families, international education is an essential aspect of Chongqing and Liangjiang New Area’s attractiveness. Without an educational system that suits the international families and their goals, businesses coming to Chongqing are less likely to be able to recruit the talent they need, whom likely would have to relocate to Chongqing on a permanent or semi-permanent basis.

International Education has become an indispensable part of Chongqing’s current and future development. The High-tech Independent Innovation Zone, Free Trade Zone, as well as Chongqing’s involvement in the International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and the Belt and Road Initiative, are all bringing an increasing number of foreign enterprises to Chongqing. This increases the need for high-quality international education in the city.
China accounts for the largest number of students studying overseas, but data from the Chinese Ministry of Education show that almost half a million overseas students are currently studying at universities in China. By 2049, China aims to be one of the top destinations for international students.
Yew Chung International School (YCIS) of Chongqing was established to serve Chongqing’s expat community and provide them with an international curriculum for students aged 3-18 (aka K-12). The school currently has about 400 students and is located conveniently in Jiangbei District on one of the main roads that connect Chongqing’s International Airport with the Central Business Districts. A new teaching building is currently under construction and expected to be completed in 2020, which will increase the capacity to around 1000 students in total.
Access to international education is a significant selling point for overseas talent, considering moving to Chongqing. Access for their children to continue their education uninterrupted and a network of expats already in the same area can make a massive difference for professionals looking to relocate to Chongqing. YCIS’ high-quality international curriculum guarantees the students are well equipped to attend local Chinese universities or go overseas to study at other international universities.
In this episode of A New Corridor for New Energy, we are meeting with YCIS General manager and YCIS Head of Secondary Education to talk about the school’s importance to the expat community in Chongqing, their program and the school’s success in Chongqing.
