On August 15, The 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was published, deciding the best 1,000 research universities globally with 132 in the Chinese mainland. It is the first time for Chongqing University to rank in the Top 400.

From the ranking in 501-600 (46-58 in Chinese mainland) of 2017, to 401-500 (36-51 in Chinese mainland) in 2018, and to 301-400 (28-39 in Chinese mainland) in 2019, Chongqing University has taken several measures to promote the Double First-Class Plan, strengthen discipline construction, and improve the quality of the disciplines. The university has paid great attention to frontier research, intensifying the interdisciplinary integration to meet national and domestic demands, and solve shared critical scientific problems to meet critical needs in China’s emerging strategic areas. In 2018, Chongqing University launched the construction of Research Center of Plant Functional Genomics, Research Center of Trans-dimension Cellular Material, Coupled Semiconductor Center, and other vital institutes focused on building a large-sized scientific experimental facility for super-transient matter and started original scientific research from scratch.

To build a discipline system that follows the target of the world first-class universities, Chongqing University takes its advantageous disciplines as the mainline and strives to meet the demands of the academic foreland, national major scientific and technological projects, and top-notch innovative personnel. It also takes the three discipline groups of smart energy, advanced manufacture, and new urbanization as the starting points gives priority to the three Double First-Class Plan disciplines of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering, and enables them to stimulate the joint development of other disciplines.

Recent years have seen the stable promotion of several indexes of Chongqing University in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, and its remarkable achievements in the top four ranking lists of the QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, US News Ranking for the Top Universities, and ARWU, and other third-party lists. In ARWU released in June 2019, Chongqing University has 20 disciplines listed, three in the Top 50 and nine in the Top 100.

ARWU is the first ranking list for the comprehensive global universities, and since its first edition in 2003, the one of this year is the 17th. The results have been presented on the basis of comparable indexes and objective third-party data around the world, including the Award (Nobel prize or Fields medal laureates, 20%), HiCi (Highly cited researchers in 21 subject categories, 20%), N&S (Publications in Nature & Science, 20%), PUB (Publications indexed in Science Citation Index-expanded and Social Science Citation Index, 20%), Alumni (Nobel prize or Fields medal laureates who studied at university, 10%), and PCP (Per Capita Performance. Average of 5 other indicators weighted by number of staff, 10%). The ARWU is taking a leading position for its objectivity and transparency, and it is also in the most influential and authoritative organization of its kind in the world.
