7000 Chinese Characters Carved on a 20 Centimeter Mammoth Teeth

Chongqing - November 17 is the last day of Chongqing Gala of Time. After a week-long cultural carnival, visitors and citizens have enjoyed colorful culture from different districts and counties of Chongqing. The last day of the cultural carnival presents featured culture in Bishan District, including a qipao dress show and famous micro-carvings.

The Bishan micro-carving process is based on gold, silver, jade, ivory, precious stone, and hair. The main content is poetry, famous paintings, and local culture. The carving skill originated from the Qing Dynasty to the sixth generation of descendants, becoming a prestigious symbol of Chinese culture.

There is a micro-carving art piece, made of mammoth teeth, just over 20 centimeters with two arms set in red sandalwood. There are more than 7,000 characters on it, which are different kinds of typefaces of traditional Chinese calligraphy. For this piece, it won the Golden Phoenix Award for micro-carvings in China. It is the first time this treasure shown to the public.

The artist of this mammoth teeth piece, Pan Qihui, is a Chinese art and crafts master, as well as an intangible cultural heritage artist. In addition, he has studied and researched micro-cavings for more than 40 years. His artwork, Along the River During the Qingming Festival, has become a national treasure, on display at the National Museum of China.
