On November 14, the Asian Combined Youth Championships — Chongqing (CHN) 2019 was held at the Chongqing Huayan Gecko King National Rock-Climbing Demonstration Park. The competition lasted until the 17th, appealing to over 100 athletes from 10 countries and regions.
As the top-notch climbing event for young people in Asia, it demonstrated the highest level of competitive youth rock climbing in Asia. To compete with the strong forces of traditional rock-climbing powers–Japan and South Korea, the China National Rock-Climbing Team went all out.
Particularly, Chongqing also selected seven athletes to partake in the competition, including Bi Dingyu, a 16-year-old girl who is in her second year of high school in the Chongqing Yucai Secondary School. She usually attends classes in school on weekdays and takes climbing training for one day every weekend. She carried off the first prize of the Women’s Group B of Social Club Competition in the second Youth Games of the People’s Republic of China this year.
Bi Dingyu signed up for the all-around competition in this event. In preparation for the competition, she had to undergo a large amount of training lasting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. “After an hour of physical training such as running on stairs, I have to climb the palisades with cross-training on speed, rock climbing, and difficulty.”
Hosted by the Asian Council of the International Federation of Sport Climbing, the competition consisted of two events of men’s and women’s all-around competition, which were divided into Junior Group A (born in 2002 and 2003), Junior Group B (born in 2004 and 2005) and Youth Group (born in 2000 and 2001).
This year marks the second visit of the event to Chongqing. Also, the second intercontinental rock-climbing event staged in Chongqing after the IFSC Climbing World Cup Chongqing 2019 held in April this year.
