The 816 Project, this “mysterious place” seated along the Wujiang River in Baitao Town, Fuling, hides more than 10 years of construction history of an underground nuclear project. In 1966, the special engineering corps of PLA 8342 landed from the air in the deep mountains of Baitao Town, Fuling District. Until April 20003, the COSTIND ordered to reveal the secret, and then the 816 Project was made public, shocking the world.

Departing from Fuling District, and driving about 16 kilometers on the winding road after passing Baitao Town, we will reach the entrance of the 816 Project. This entrance is the only one remaining in the original 19 entrances. According to different plans, there is everything that one expects to find, including for entrances and exits for people and cars, exhaust tunnels, drainage ditches, warehouses, and so on. Roads in there are dense like a cobweb and shaped like a maze.
The total length of the 816 Project is about 20 kilometers. At that time, its cost reached RMB 740 million, which is equivalent to about RMB 10 billion at present. The project is completely hidden in the mountain, and it was built like a maze. It is impossible to find the exit and entrance in the drawer-shaped building cavity if there is no expert guidance. There are 18 large and small cave rooms, and more than 130 roads, guide tunnels, branch tunnels, and tunnels.
What is even more amazing is that the 816 Project is warm in winter and cool in summer, and the temperature in the four seasons is maintained at around 25°C. In addition, for combat readiness, the tunnel engineering design can prevent the explosion impact of 1 million tons of TNT-equivalent bombs, and all the reinforced concretes used were of high grade that can resist the damage caused by an M8 earthquake. The project was used for both production and power generation. In addition to the nuclear reactor zone, the cave also has a nuclear waste treatment zone for the treatment of polluted wastes such as wastewater and waste fuel rods.
The workshop in the cave of 816 Project has a depth of about 400 meters, and the top cover is up to 200 meters thick. In the nuclear instrument room of the control room, all the instrument components on the console are made of imported stainless steel, which has been shining so far. The densely distributed instruments in the instrument room showed the dedication and wisdom of the builders at the time.
The largest cave room in the 816 Project is the main plant of the reactor. The nuclear reactor hall is 79.6 meters high, which is equivalent to the height of a 20-story building. It is known as the “world’s first artificial cave” so far, making it an absolutely stunning project.
