Chongqing- On Dec. 23, “The Working Field Seminar of Kitchen Waste Re-utilization” was held in Chongqing, which was organized by the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the PRC was invited to attend the seminar. Representatives from more than 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities attended the seminar. Chongqing took the lead in carrying out the pilot project of resource utilization of kitchen waste, constructed collection and transfer systems that cover towns and villages, grasped the core technology of harmless disposal. The scale and technology of garbage disposal are at the forefront of China.

Where will the garbage go？—Smart garbage full life-cycle management system

Xiajiaba Smart Urban Solid Waste Transferring Station

Many citizens are worried that sorted garbage will be mixed for transportation and disposal eventually. Chongqing Environment & Sanitation Group took the lead to develop the “Garbage Full Life-cycle Management System” so that people can trace the location of garbage now. The group has installed GPS systems and monitoring facilities in its garbage vehicles, garbage cans, transfer stations, and disposal plants. The whole process monitoring is realized from garbage dropping, garbage collection, vehicles entering transfer stations, unpacking and collecting garbage, garbage transfer vehicles transferring, to garbage transfer vehicles entering terminal disposal plants.

Three garbage transfer stations, Xiajiaba, Jieshi, and Zouma, are equipped with intelligent multi-level garbage separation systems. The system can identify the types of garbage intelligently and accurately, and sort the trash automatically and efficiently. 

After sorting, crushing, magnetic separation, and air separation, the garbage will be transported to the incineration plant, kitchen waste disposal plants, and waste plastics disposal plants.

At present, Chongqing has built six kitchen waste disposal plants, including Heishizi, Jiangjin, Qianjiang, Yongchuan, Hechuan, Fuling. More than 4 million tons of kitchen waste has been disposed of and reused innocuously, with an average of 2600 tons per day.

Through the re-utilization of kitchen waste, garbage becomes a treasure in the end. Heishizi kitchen waste disposal plant adopts the world's leading garbage recycling technology. Firstly, oil and water inside the kitchen waste will be separated. Secondly, the separated hogwash oil will be converted into biodiesel through a chemical reaction. Then, biogas is produced from hogwash after high-temperature anaerobic digestion. At last, purified biogas can be made into CNG gas or used to generate electricity.

Based on the daily disposal of 1000 tons of kitchen waste, it can generate 28 million cubic meters of biogas, 33 million degrees of power generation, 8000 tons of biodiesel, 7.98 million cubic meters of CNG, 24000 tons of organic fertilizer, and 220000 tons of carbon dioxide emission can be reduced annually.

Chongqing is building a new kitchen waste disposal plant called "Luoqi Kitchen Waste Disposal Plant." By 2020, the disposal capacity of kitchen waste in the downtown will reach 2600 tons per day, and the harmless disposal rate will reach 95%; the disposal scale of kitchen waste in 23 surrounding districts and counties will reach 1800 tons per day, and the safe disposal rate will reach 90%.
