In response to the core task to build an international consumption business district specified in the newly released plan of Chongqing to build an international consumption center, pilot efforts to transform and upgrade Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street will be made to build the area into a national pedestrian street with beautiful surroundings, business prosperity, strong culture, and sound public order, thus supporting Chongqing to achieve its ambition.

According to the Notice on Pilot Work of Pedestrian Street Transforming and Upgrading issued by the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC last year, it is planned to create a group of leading and high-end pedestrian streets nationwide and internationally within 2-3 years. Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street of Yuzhong District, as the only representative of Chongqing, was included in the transforming and upgrading of the national first 11 pilot pedestrian streets.

Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street extended from 1km to 1.5km after renovation

In 2019, Chongqing has implemented over 50 key projects, achieving the public investment of about RMB one billion and the private investment of RMB two billion, completing more than 70,000-square-meter adjusted commercial space, and welcoming over 200 new well-known brands.

“In order to present a better look, we have translated the four distinguished and characteristic pedestrian streets on the main street of the Chongqing International Financial Street into four avenues of famous products, fashion, memory, and art.” According to Li Yang, Deputy Director of the Management Committee of Jiefangbei CBD, Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street has been extended from 1km to 1.5km after renovation.

When it comes to the business activities, Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street has experienced the improvement of its six department stores since this year. Moreover, the exhibition areas of Chongqing International Financial Street have seen 30 various high-quality famous product launch events and debut campaigns, such as Giada International Fashion Show, CCTV broadcast of My People, My Country, and film release of The Captain.

Emphasis on the flexible use of cultural resources

As for the cultural resources, the focus has been laid on making flexible use of cultural resources of Jiefangbei, to create multi-level and three-dimensional consumption space through connecting historical sites, landscapes, and popular tourist attractions at the point, line and plane level. In this year’s preservation and restoration of cultural relics such as the former sites of South Korean Recovery Army Command and China-UK Liaison Office, some experience commercial activities including cultural display and street coffee houses have been introduced. Furthermore, the construction of a host of key scenic areas and old blocks, such as Luzu Temple and Daijia Alley, will achieve phased results within this year.

Active moves have been taken to advance the pilot of the departure tax refund on Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street to improve the street commercial development, with the number of departure tax refund businesses increasing from 4 to 15, thus making Jiefangbei Chongqing International Financial Street a preliminary departure tax refund demonstration street.

5G technology exhibition and experience

Jiefangbei 5G Experience Hall offers many 5G scenario applications for free, such as “5G+VR” – wearing VR glasses to have an immersive viewing of Jiefangbei, and “5G+Remote Driving” – controlling the car remotely by sitting in the simulated cockpit.

Moreover, two measures have been taken to improve intelligence. One is to accelerate the planning and layout of 5G base stations, taking the lead in achieving the full coverage of 5G signal and 5G WiFi. The other is to develop and establish a visual 3D big data platform for pedestrian streets, taking the lead in building Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street into a 5G demonstration street.

As for the future transforming and upgrading, Chongqing will create an international conference center, brand exhibition center, and imported commodity center on Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street.
