Chongqing- Guo Guo, a 7-month-old baby girl, the youngest patient in Chongqing, who had been hospitalized after being diagnosed with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), was discharged from Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital at noon on February 19.
She was carried out of the hospital by her mother at noon on that day.
Ms. Mo, the girl’s mother, was diagnosed with the COVID-19 on January 31. It took her 20 days to beat the disease. “When the 14-day isolation and observation ends, I’ll first do something for the epidemic,” said Mo.
On the day they left, Guo Guo received a rabbit toy from the hospital to celebrate their victory against the disease.
However, one person was missing from their reunion. Guo Guo’s father, Mr. Tan, was diagnosed with the COVID-19 on February 8 and is still treated in the isolation ward for a mild form of the disease. After the mother and daughter were released from the hospital, they will be re-examined after 14 days of self-isolation. During the period, they should take their temperature and watch their breathing every day. Considering Guo Guo’s age, Ms. Mo is planning to spend the 14 days of isolation in the Wanzhou District in northeastern Chongqing before returning home. She hopes that her husband can be cured as soon as possible so that they could go home together.
“Guo Guo was not seriously ill, so she was treated conservatively. The antivirals she was given were relatively simple, so the side effects would be slight.” Mo Yunbo, Director of Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital, said that pediatric nurses were specially assigned to the ward for the baby. He introduced that one of the biggest challenges in treating infants with COVID-19 is the rapid change in their condition. Luckily, Guo Guo’s situation was steadily improving before she was discharged from the hospital.
Chief Pediatrician Xiong Daoxue said that Guo Guo kept regular feeding and sleeping in the ward. Her intake of milk increased from 30ml in the beginning to 50ml at the time of discharge. “Guo Guo is so adorable. The ward was full of her laughter every time she was held.” Mo Daoxue told us that Guo Guo was not shy with strangers, and she always gurgled when someone held her. He added, “Guo Guo and her mother were in the same ward. Sometimes, we would help to hold her.”
Ms. Mo and her daughter Guo Guo were admitted to the hospital on February 1 and 3, respectively.
Chief physicians of Guo Guo include Xiong Daoxue from the pediatric intensive care unit and Xiao Hongzhou from of the children’s respiratory department of Jiangnan Branch of Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital. They had been treating and caring for Guo Guo. Xiong Daoxue said that Guo Guo was not seriously ill when she was brought in the hospital. She is so little that she was only treated with antivirals, and specialized pediatric nurses were arranged to take care of her.
After consultation with two panels of experts at the municipal and district levels, the mother and daughter were getting better under careful treatment. They had no fever for more than three consecutive days, their body temperature remained normal, respiratory symptoms improved markedly, chest imaging showed significant inflammatory absorption, and both results of their nucleic acid tests were negative. After the assessment, the two panels of experts thought they met the criteria for the release from isolation and discharge of the diagnosed cases of the COVID-19 and agreed with their discharge on February 19.
