The Invisible War Meeting with Kai: Share Chongqing Experiences with World

By RUI HUDENG ZHANG|Apr 08,2020

Chongqing- On April 7, 2020, Jorah Kai Wood's new book The Invisible War news conference was held in Chongqing Foreign Language School. In this meeting, Jorah Kai Wood answered questions related to his diary during the COVID-19 epidemic in Chongqing. His book is a collection of 60 days of his quarantine journal, and will be translated into different languages in order to share the message to the world.

On the eve of the Spring Festival in 2020, a sudden COVID-19 outbreak disrupted everyone's life.

In order to tell overseas friends the story of China's anti-epidemic situation, Kai, a Canadian writer and teacher from Chongqing Foreign Language School who has lived in Chongqing for 6 years used a diary to record his quarantine life in Chongqing, conveying an optimistic attitude towards life, reflecting the effective measures and progress of Chongqing's citizens and governments at all levels of epidemic prevention and control.

The Chinese Foreign Languages Bureau decided to assemble Kai's 60 diaries into a book and distribute them in multiple languages.

Diary Series attracted Canadian TV for an interview

Kai, his wife Xiaolin Wang, and two dogs (Ben Ben and Hachoo) live in the foreign teacher's dormitory of Chongqing Foreign Language School, Jiulongpo. In his diary, he described in detail how to live in Chongqing as a foreigner, especially during the COVID-19 epidemic, gathering resources and practicing social distancing and strong hygiene protocols.

During the epidemic, Kai reads and reviews a large number of English articles about the fight against the COVID-19 virus every day. He has comprehensive information about this battle in Chongqing and has integrated it into his diary.

From January 20 to the present, Kai's diary is published daily on the iChongqing's website (www.ichongqing.info). It has been serialized for 60 issues and is still being updated. The diary was published on iChongqing's Facebook and other social media platforms, attracting a lot of attention from overseas users. Canadian CTV has interviewed him for this. Canadian publishers hope that this diary can be assembled into a book and published in North America.

Incorporating a large number of Chongqing anti-epidemic scenes

This diary truly records what has been heard, seen, thought, and considered in this special period of COVID-19 with the vision of foreigners in Chongqing, and reflects China's powerful, organized and caring in this fight against the epidemic, which also aims to spread the positive spirit of Chongqing epidemic fighting protocols for outbreak prevention and control to the world. This book not only has the author's personal life experiences but also has a grand background description of China and Chongqing's anti-epidemic situation. It is both documentary and literary and has strong readability.

According to Dongyan Chen, the Chief Editor in Chongqing International Media Center, "by reading this diary, people can feel the determination and confidence of the Chinese people's faiths in prevention and control", said Mrs. Chen.

It will be published  in multiple languages

The New World Publishing House under the China Foreign Languages Bureau will publish this book for domestic and foreign publications, including Chinese and English versions. It will publish it in the form of e-books, paper books, and audiobooks. Relevant editing and publishing work is being pushed forward.

It is understood that to spread overseas the image of China as a responsible country in the fight against the COVID-19 battle, the China Foreign Affairs Bureau chose to publish this book. New World Press believes that this book is commendable because it truly records China in the eyes of a Canadian who has lived in Chongqing, China. He observes and tells the real situation of China's fight against the epidemic from the perspective of foreigners, which has a strong impact on foreign readers. Attractiveness is a useful attempt to "tell a good Chinese story in the words of a foreigner"; the author focuses on discovering and conveying the optimism of the Chinese when facing the epidemic, and hopes to transfer the Chinese approach to Canada. It is recommended by more overseas people, which provides a useful reference for the global anti-epidemic situation.

China Foreign Languages Bureau and Chongqing International Communication Center will carry out the promotion of this book through various channels. In order to cooperate with the publication of the new book, the author Kai wrote the English song "The Invisible War" and is contacting overseas musicians to record and release. "Some Canadian friends learned that I was going to publish this book and expressed their hope that they would buy it and help them through this difficult time," said Kai.
