By JIEYU WANGKAILONG TAN|Jul 21,2020

According to the government of Shapingba District on July 14, the packages of some products in cold storage in Chongqing Western Logistics Park were found to be positive for COVID-19. The leading group for epidemic prevention and control in the district immediately investigated the distribution sites, stores, consumers and related people, sealed up the products, kept the related people in quarantine, and carried out nucleic acid testing for the environment, products, and associated people. On July 16, the ripple effect has been shown in the market. However, only the packages of frozen white leg shrimps from Ecuador were contaminated, in the face of which many sellers displayed the “negative” report.

Sellers make “self-attesting”

Frozen Shrimps

KING OSCAR showed the nucleic acid test report for its imported frozen white leg shrimps issued by Adicon Clinical Laboratories, Ltd. on June 23: negative. The black tiger shrimps from Vietnam were sold at 33.9 yuan/pack (200g) and tested negative for COVID-19 on June 16. The freshwater shrimps sold by Shishixian was tested negative on June 12. The products of Hi Tomorrow are insured against food problems by CPIC. Besides that, many e-commerce companies handling frozen shrimps on Tmall, Suning.com, freshhema.com, etc. have also displayed the “negative” report.

The market supervision department will soon share information with the public

Given that the packages of some products in cold storage in Chongqing Western Logistics Park were found to be positive for COVID-19, a person at Sanya Bay Market Supervision Office explained that Sanya Bay mainly deals with the wholesale, retail and light processing of fresh seafood, and seldom with the importing of frozen shrimps. According to the investigation, only four stores sell frozen shrimps, three purchasing from Chongqing, and one from Chengdu. No more than 100 boxes were sold and now have all been removed from the market.

“The largest seafood market in Southwest China, Sanya Bay, undergoes nucleic acid testing and inspection regularly. Chongqing Center for Disease Control and Prevention carried out the testing yesterday and has not released the report,” said Li Zhihong. Therefore, the news about the frozen products has little impact on the Sanya Bay market.

Notably, the packages of frozen white leg shrimps from Ecuador were tested positive for COVID-19, not for the first time. It was found before by Customs in Xiamen, Dalian, and other places, and the sales were halted.

Shapingba District, Nan’an District, and others set up special teams for investigating door to door and nucleic acid testing for people that purchased Jinkang white leg shrimps and the related. Chongqing Market Regulation Bureau said that it would soon release the report on the circulation of the products on the market.
