Chongqing- The Yangtze River has delineated the majestic city of Chongqing for millennia, as the glorious sight of mountains, waters, and city lights shine for all to behold.

The former residence of Sanmao retells his legacy embodied in the quote, ’Should there be an afterlife, I would like to stand like a tree through eternity, free of sentimental burden, half set in the peaceful earth, and half swaying in the wind.’

Nearby, the Nanzhishan Bookstore exudes with character amongst the mountain environment and offers an ideal location for reading at leisure.

Along the old streets of Longmenhao, explore the foreign history amongst the former sites of the American Embassy, the British Naval Club, the British Salt Administration, and French Naval Barracks.

In the Two Rivers Four Banks core area, the aim is to build a commercial and business district centered around a landscape replete with history and culture.

This core area of Nan'an will undergo a comprehensive upgrade, while Nanbin Road will be promoted as an economic function zone, open financial pilot zone, a pioneering zone for international cooperation, and an international golden tourism belt integrating business, travel, culture, and sports.

The Palace Museum Memorial Hall is a key project due to open later this year and will feature a digital version of the Forbidden City, Academy, and Lecture Hall. The aim is to integrate historical relics and traditional culture into modern urban life.

The Chongqing City Planning Exhibition Hall is another star project. The hall has been relocated from Chaotianmen Square to Danzishi, Nan’an District, and is expected to be ready by the end of this year. The exhibition hall will feature a panoramic and immersive nature experience to vividly display the beauty of mountains and clear waters in Chongqing.

The Yangtze River Audio Memory Museum showcases a trio of themes based on the sounds, views, and flavors of Chongqing, linked by the central concept of Music+.

A Chongqing vinyl record experience center is also under construction, which will offer an audiovisual platform with transparent and panoramic views over the river. The platform will transmit the sound of ancient rhyme, Bayu, the spirit of resistance, the capital of life, and the ecological highland.

Looking to the future, Nan'an District is positioning itself as the top Yangtze River scenic location based on the ecological island of Guangyang, the largest green island in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The attraction will integrate tourism with a range of industries, as Chongqing continues to grow in international stature.

At present, the island has completed the first stage of an ecological restoration project on schedule, and it is open to the public by appointment.

Guangyang Island was once a major settlement of the ancient Ba people and an origin of fishing and hunting culture in the Yangtze River basin. Bronze wares from the Warring States Period have been unearthed here, as well as ancient remnants of water management systems devised by the founding king Dayu. These precious relics pay testament to the heroic and unyielding spirit of Chongqing.

Last century, during the times of the Anti-Fascist League, Guangyang Island became an important air force base in the defense of Chongqing and was also the first airport to be constructed in the southwest.

Following the initial stage in the Guangyang Island restoration project, the location has become an open classroom, featuring a 12-kilometer circle route around the island packed with ecological experiences. Further attractions include the western and eastern tips, a comprehensive demonstration site for ecological restoration, a mountain plateau, sports field. The result is a land of verdant mountains, clear waters, lush forests, and green pastures.

In addition to green travel routes for the island, such as pathways and public transportation, cruise ships departing from Chaotianmen Docks are also expected to sail as far as Guangyang Island, thus linking the historical and cultural scenery of Nanbin Road with the ecological paradise of Guangyang Island.

In later phases of restoration, Guangyang Island will install systems for clean energy, green transportation, waste recycling, ecological water supplies, and drainage channels.

The island is closely adhering to the concepts of green technology, low carbon footprints, recycling, and intelligence. The infrastructure and cultural facilities will form a demonstration zone leading the way in green development of the Yangtze River.

As the countdown begins for the double innovation project of the National Cultural Industry Demonstration Park and National Public Cultural Service System Demonstration Zone, a large number of performing arts venues has been put into use in Nanan, adding to the Changjianghui Contemporary Art Center, Shi Guangnan Grand Theater, Guorui 303 Art Theater, and International Circus City.

Leading art institutions such as the National Symphony Orchestra, Huace Film and Television, Huaren Culture, and Poly Pictures have established cooperative relationships with Nan’an, while the Chongqing Ballet, Chongqing Song and Dance Troupe, and Chongqing Opera House have also performed high quality works in the district.

The Chongqing International Marathon is among the four Grand Slams in China. The competition has attained domestic and international gold labels to become known as the Double Gold Event. Each year, tens of thousands of runners from all over the world grace Mountain City and the Yangtze River with their passion and speed.

Soon, the first edition of the Chengdu-Chongqing Twin City Film Festival and third Avant-Garde Cinematic Art Festival will be held online and offline through live broadcasts, recordings, and linkage between venues in the two cities.

It will attract more than 300 domestic and foreign-produced films and the participation of 30,000 moviegoers. The event has stimulated tourism, business, entertainment, catering, accommodation, transportation, and other industries to the tune of tens of millions of yuan.

Following the settlement of leading companies such as Huawei, Shugen Internet, and Lihe Science and Technology in Nan’an District, iFlytek entered the South Bank with a planned investment of 1 billion yuan to establish the iFlytek National Military-civilian Integrated Artificial Intelligence Engineering Research Center and Settlements Center. The installation will serve an AI innovation platform themed of the integration between military and civilian applications.

In April this year, Alibaba Group also settled in Nan'an District and established a regional headquarters base covering multiple business sectors including finance, big data, and entertainment.

The China Smart Valley (Chongqing) Science and Technology Park is a leading industry in the west of China, and radiates influence worldwide, as big data and the smart industry continue to develop rapidly.

Nanshan bonsai are listed as intangible cultural heritage and represent a concentrated display of typical Sichuanese forms. They are tended by hand using traditional methods for classical, artistic, and ornamental functions. They are suitable for adorning offices, homes, and gardens.

Tushan kiln is a Song Dynasty art form that reflects their aesthetic philosophies and the wisdom of ancient Ba Country. The classic series of Tushan kiln tea sets combine Song Dynasty aesthetics with modern practicality in perfect balance.

Nan’an ‘Lu’ hotpot is different from the well known traditional version in Chongqing. It originated from horse-drawn caravans long in the past and contains dry ginger and chili spices to dispel cold, humidity, and fatigue. Horsemen carried iron pots on their journeys for cooking as they traveled. Lu Hot pot has now become the most unique representative of hot pot in Nan’an District.

Qixiang peanuts adopt strict and unique traditional crafts and recipes, with an insistence on seeking new fragrances and tastes. This crisp specialty is loved by customers and has become a Chongqing snack food brand from Longmenhao Street, Nan'an District.

Guangyang Town folk tales is a general term used for folklore and stories told widely in the area. The development of shipping on the upper Yangtze River leads to the prosperity of dock culture in Chongqing. Exotic Stories from distant lands along the river came ashore and merged into the daily lives of people along the banks.

Ganpopo decanted wine is made from brewed glutinous rice and uses a process combining yeast and traditional handiwork. The early germination and production techniques originated from the blend of geography and humanities in Nan’an.

The people of Nanshan love the tradition of eating fresh glutinous rice, making Ganpopo glutinous rice more sweet and delicious under the precipitation of the long history, which is loved by the masses.
