Explore Original Three Gorges and Culture in Wuxi Ancient Salt Capital

Chongqing- Wuxi is located in the northeast of Chongqing at the junction with Shaanxi and Hubei Provinces. The county is rich in history and culture and is known as the ancient salt capital of China thanks to over 4,000 years of production in the industry.

While the Daning River serves as the axis, Hongchiba and Yintiaoling Nature Reserves are like wings to the east and west, home to over 1,000 wonderful scenic spots with fine ecology. Wuxi is an ancient city of mysteries that prospered upon the salt industry for over 4300 years, thanks to an artesian spring that continues to flow at the foot of Baoyuan Mountain in the ancient town of Ningchang, which became one of the most prominent salt capitals during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Salt production came to an end in Ningchang in 1996. Today, the salt springs still flow, and generations of new visitors can play witness the changes of history through salt industry relics that have long fallen silent, and stilted buildings that have survived the elements.

Jixin Ridge was once a vital commercial post on the salt road between Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, and Shaanxi. It was once an important military pass in the Cold Weapon era, and ancient battlefields are still clearly visible today.

The main peak of Yintiao Ridge towers 2796.8 meters above sea level and has an average elevation of 1,900 meters. It is the highest peak in Chongqing Municipality and forms the roof of the Three Gorges Area together with Shennongjia.

Yintiao Ridge Nature Reserve has retained the original natural environment and enjoys the reputation as the green lungs of Chongqing. There are over 1,500 species of plants in the reserve, including the davidia involucrata, yew, and rock cypress, while over 300 species of golden eagles, white foxes, forest musk deer, black bears, leopards, and red pandas combine to form a natural gene bank of protected species.

Jingzhuba features carved rock faces where cliff burial grounds have been preserved in the highest concentration within the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. They are arranged in even-numbered rows along with narrow stone platforms upon the stone cliffs and are a physical study resource for Ba-Chu culture and the burial rituals of ancient ethnic minorities. This location has attracted widespread attention from the academic circles, and numerous mysteries remain unsolved to this day.

Wuxi is ripe for tourism throughout the year. In spring, lush vegetation adorns the Daning riverbanks, mountain flowers bloom in splendor, while sumptuous peaches and plums compete for the limelight.

In summer, Hongchiba National Forest Park is known as a sea of flowers among the clouds, and the home of splendid grasslands. The temperature remains a cool 17℃, as cloud lines float across the flowers and rolling green pastures. After taking in the mountain scenery, a one hour drive to the Daning River offers the thrills of a rafting experience amongst a natural environment and clear waters.

In autumn, the beautifully perilous Lanying Grand Canyon displays a glorious scene of mountains ablaze in red leaves, as forest-covered slopes layer upon each other as in Chinese landscape paintings. This feast of colorful in Hongchiba lasts barely half a month and is perhaps why the experience is so unforgettable.

Heavy winter snows arrive early in Wuxi at altitudes over 800 meters, where romantic scenes of white attract visitors wherever they may choose to venture. Hongchiba is a particularly good mountain location to play in the snow, where people cannot help but sigh in admiration, ‘Why travel north when snows fall so magnificently this far south?’

Villages in Wuxi hold a rich variety of rural tourism festivals, where people familiar with local traditional cuisine turn everyday ingredients into great delicacies through the purity of mind and sophisticated techniques. Attend the many festivals themed on plum blossoms, cauliflower, winter peaches, honey pomelos, and Chinese medicine.

Hongchiba National Forest Park is a rare natural alpine pasture in southwest China. It covers an area of 242 square kilometers, with altitudes varying between 1,600 to 2,630 meters. The average annual temperature is 7.1℃, and which reaches only 17℃ in summer.

Ningchang Ancient Town is among the fifth batch of Chinese historical and cultural towns and is one of the earliest salt production bases in China. It was among the top ten salt capitals during the Ming and Qing Dynasties thanks to the ancient salt springs that have flowed unbroken for millennia.

In addition to the old stilted buildings and salt industry relics, the temples of Longjun and Wuwang are great places to contemplate the past and present.

The famous Wuxi grilled fish uses a secret recipe and is listed as an intangible heritage.

Lanying Grand Canyon is located in Shuangyang Township 20 kilometers away from Wuxi City. The canyon stretches 100 kilometers in length, with an average depth of about 2000 meters. The deepest part is exceeding 2400 meters, while the narrowest section of the valley spans only 13 meters. The canyon features high waterfalls, lofty peaks, rock formations, clear waters, serene caves, birds and beasts.

Miao Gorge begins from the Malian River south of Wuxi City in the north and ends at the Miaoxi River in the south. The gorge is 22 kilometers long, and 20-40 meters wide. Lofty rock faces either side rise up to heights of 900 meters along the gorge famous for the mountain scenery, numerous bends, fast rapids, sandbanks, and waterfalls.

Since the completion of the Three Gorges Project, the reservoir stretches only as far as the mouth of Miao Gorge, which means the original natural features have remained intact, hence the title Original Three Gorges was bestowed upon the attraction.

Yuntai Temple sits on the peak of Miao Gorge. It was built in the reign of Emperor Yang in the Sui Dynasty and was known as the Crown of Ancient Temples in Eastern Sichuan. Stood on Yuntai Peak, you can admire a panoramic view of Wuxi County, and the wonderful scenery around this magical temple.

Wuxi County is the hometown of green potatoes in China and was the host of the 15th China Potato Conference. Its unique climate, soil quality, sunlight exposure, temperature, and humidity have nurtured the superior quality of potatoes grown here.

The taste is delicate, soft, and glutinous, and makes for healthy food with a unique flavor. In 2011, the Ministry of Agriculture approved the registration of the Wuxi potato as a Chinese landmark agricultural product. In 2020, the Wuxi potato will feature among the first batch of 100 Sino-European mutually recognized products, and only such example from Chongqing.

Laoying Tea is actually a healthy substitute derived from the camphor tree.

Grilled Wuxi fish uses a technique listed as municipal intangible heritage, and has a history going back more than two thousand years. As the birthplace of grilled fish, Wuxi has used the same traditional methods since the very beginning.

As soon as the live fish are killed, a secret blend of spices are first stuffed into the belly, then the fish is slowly roasted over charcoal. The color is yellow without any scorch marks, the fragrance is rich yet not greasy, and the taste is crispy on the outside while tender on the inside.

Daning River embroidery is listed as an intangible cultural heritage in Chongqing Municipality. The works are made of cotton and velvet, and the patterns mostly depict folk wedding customs and shaman culture.

The embroidered images are popular for their simplistic beauty and elegance with strong local characteristics. As a result, they possess a high market and collection value.

Longfeng handicrafts are also listed as intangible cultural heritage. They use boxwood, peach, ebony, mahogany, and other raw materials, which are hand-carved to produce wooden combs, hairpins, screens, paperweights, root art, and classical furniture.

These durable products are a perfect combination of ancient and modern art and are highly sought after by consumers at home and abroad.

Although tea features in the name, Laoying Tea is actually a plant substitute made from tender shoots and leaves of the camphor tree.

In traditional medicine, records state that Laoying Tea has the properties to relieve coughs, phlegm, asthma, heat, and thirst, as well as improving eyesight and hardening the stomach.

Over centuries of inheritance, Wuxi Eagle Tea has maintained its true green and ecological characteristics and is known as a healthy tea substitute for longevity.
