The earliest record of Tongliang in history books was in the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period. In 329 BC, the King Wei of Chu destroyed the state of Ba and named his concubine son as marquis south of the Pujiang River. This marked the historical beginnings of Tongliang.

Tongliang is home to the eighth stone age cultural site discovered in China, which dates back more than 20,000 years, and one of the oldest in the Sichuan Basin. The Chinese Academy of Sciences officially refers to the site in the term Tongliang Culture.

The Ministry of Culture has designated Tongliang as the Hometown of Chinese Folk Culture and Art. For example, the Tongliang Dragon Dance, which enjoys renown both at home and abroad, originated from this district of Chongqing.

Anju is an ancient town that lives in the present. Since its establishment in the Sui Dynasty, the history of Anju spans over 1,400 years. Inside, there are still numerous city walls courtyards, ancestral guilds, palaces, and temples that have survived to this day, and make up the Nine Palaces and Eighteen Temples renowned within Sichuan Chongqing.

Among the prodigal sons of Anju are famous literati, generals, heroes, and imperial academicians from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
