Chongqing Sees 146% Growth Tourist Visits during May Day Holiday

Chongqing - Statistics from the Municipal Culture and Tourism Development Commission show that the city's A-level scenic areas received a total of 10.20 million tourist visits during the five-day Labor Day holiday, which ended on May 5, representing a whopping 146% increase year on year and exceeding the pre-pandemic level in 2019 by more than 10%.

Among the city's most popular tourist destinations are the national 5A-level scenic areas in the peripheral counties and districts, such as the Wulong Karst Tourist Area, the Qianjiang Wash Water Scenic Area, the Yunyang Longgang Scenic Area, and the Nanchuan Jinfo Mountain Scenic Area, which received 167,000, 131,000, 72,000, and 63,000 tourist visits respectively.

Downtown Chongqing also saw millions of visitors swarming into the trending tourist spots and facilities, such as the Hongya Cave Folk Custom Scenic Area, the Ciqikou Ancient Town Scenic Area, the Chongqing Zoo, and the Yangtze River Cableway Scenic Area, which received 409,000, 277,000, 173,000, and 104,000 tourist visits respectively.

What's more, as an inland megacity well-known for its revolutionary history, Chongqing abounds in "red-tourism" resources. During the holiday, the city's 21 Communist revolutionary sites received a total of 521,000 tourist visits, of which 119,000 were to the Gele Mountain Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery in Shapingba District, 82,000 to the Former Residence of Yang Angong in Tongnan District, and 45,000 to the Nanyaojie Revolutionary Base Site in Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County.

To further tap on the rapidly expanding holiday consumption potential and to promote the high-quality development of the culture and tourism industry, Chongqing introduced some 400 scenic spots and 160 tourist routes for people seeking to spend their holiday within the city, accompanied by the various promotional activities and discount tickets.

During the five-day "golden week" holiday, the municipal-level literary and artistic venues, such as the Chongqing Guotai Art Center, Chongqing International Circus City, Chongqing Opera House, Kangjiantang Theater, Shancheng Folk Arts Hall, Shilou Small Theater, and Jintang Street Theater, staged some 57 professional theatrical performances to a total of 19,2000 ticket-buying audiences.

Forty-three of the city's public libraries and 41 cultural centers received 280,000 visitors and provided 1.23 million person-times of online services. A total of 397 mass cultural activities were organized citywide, attracting nearly 830,000 citizens to participate. The city's 86 museums also organized 57 thematic exhibitions and 47 community education activities, receiving 754,600 public visits.

What's more, the Municipal Culture and Tourism Development Commission also joined hands with the various counties and districts to hold intangible cultural heritage (ICH) fairs and exhibitions, including a Sichuan Opera show in Dazu District, a pilot Quyi show in Wanzhou District, a paper cut exhibition in Jiangbei District, a folk song singing competition in Shizhu Tu Autonomous County.

Huiyou Chongqing, the city's official public service platform for culture and tourism, also launched various promotional activities to give out discount coupons to people visiting the A-level scenic areas, star hotels, and literal and cultural facilities during the May Day holiday.
