By JIEYU WANGXINGCHEN YUE|May 11,2021

Chongqing — “The spirit behind the Communist Party of China has made me feel great love, regardless of the gains and losses. For me, I have gained more happiness and steadiness in life.Li Yuzhen, a 92-year-old party member, told iChongqing. In this episode of Faces of Chongqing, Li Yuzhen tells us the past decades she has experienced and shares her story in those years.

At the age of 18, Li Yuzhen joined the Eastern Sichuan guerrillas as an underground messager whose main job was to deliver information. "When I was an underground messenger, I was most affected by the news that the enemy was about to besiege our guerrilla unit." Li Yuzhen said, " In order to deliver the news as soon as possible, I used a log chute to slide down from the mountaintop, as I led the guerrillas on a withdrawal. After we had evacuated, the enemy surrounded the mountain. However, they didn't know that we had evacuated, and so they fought amongst themselves."

On another time, when delivering the Tingjin newspaper, Li Yuzhen wisely escaped obstacles and took the newspaper into the student cafeteria and delivered it to the students, disseminating important information.

"At the meal times, one of us would negotiate with the school outside, and since they didn’t let him in, I took the publication to the cafeteria as they talked. I gave speeches on the cafeteria bench, and after this was finished, we handed the publications out amongst the classmates. Once this was over, we left. Those people who wouldn’t let us in were still talking at the gate, so we told them not to bother, and we just left. Actually, I have already distributed the publications, and the speeches had already been done." Li Yuzhen shared her story with laughs.

Because of her outstanding performance, Li Yuzhen joined the Communist Party of China in 1948. "I learned a lot from other party members," said Li. The person who impressed her most was Lan Diyu, who introduced her to the Communist Party of China.

"He used his own family’s property to fund the Party. He sacrificed himself for the cause. So long as there were comrades in need, and the revolution needed him, he would give his all." Li Yuzhen said she learned the spirit of selfless dedication from Lan Diyu.

Learning from the Communist Party of China, Li Yuzhen felt giving is much happier than receiving, and she also named her granddaughter Fu Yu, which means "giving".  "I told my granddaughter since your name means giving, don't ask for anything back." As Li Yuzhen taught her descendants by deeds, these influences certainly brushed off on them, and her spirit will continue.
