Chongqing Municipality in southwestern China inaugurated a bureau of rural revitalization on May 29, marking the successful completion of the city’s historical mission of poverty alleviation and the beginning of full-scale advancement of rural revitalization.
Chongqing was one of the major impoverished places in China. However, through eight-year targeted poverty alleviation and five-year poverty elimination, the city has made satisfactory achievements.
Statistics show that a registered poverty-stricken population of 1,906,000 from 1,919 villages of 18 impoverished districts and counties has been lifted out of poverty. As extreme poverty was eradicated, the appearance of poverty-stricken areas has changed dramatically.
This marks the consolidation and expansion of poverty alleviation achievements, comprehensive advancement of rural revitalization, and historic transfer of the focus of work related to agriculture, farmers and rural areas, providing an important guarantee for implementing the rural revitalization strategy.
As a department directly under Chongqing Municipal People’s Government, the bureau of rural revitalization is under the unified leadership and management of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The committee is mainly responsible for consolidating and expanding the achievements of poverty alleviation and coordinating the implementation of the rural revitalization strategy.
During the five-year transition period, the bureau of rural revitalization will undertake such tasks as continuously consolidating and expanding poverty alleviation results, facilitating the effective connection of policies, work, and institutional teams, and coordinating rural construction, rural governance, and development of social undertakings.
Moreover, it needs to establish and improve the working mechanism for comprehensively advancing rural revitalization and strengthening institutional teams’ construction for rural revitalization.
