Centennial Milestones② Zhou Enlai’s Secret Meeting with the Hemingways

Chongqing- The classic quote "A man can be destroyed but not defeated" comes from Ernest Hemingway, the most emulated writer of modern English fiction and a man who authored many great works that continue to resonate throughout the world.

However, it’s a little-known fact that Hemingway enjoyed a lasting affinity with Chongqing. In April 1941, Hemingway visited the then war-torn city of Chongqing, during which time he had a secret meeting with Zhou Enlai.

Zhou was head of the Southern Bureau under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), where he strived to empower the United Front, established communication with parties overseas, and raised international relations of the CPC to a whole new level.
