New Products of Tushan Kiln Launched

By Eiko Cheng|Aug 05,2021

As one of China's greatest inventions, ceramics offers a glimpse into the different lifestyles of the ancients in different times and the historical vicissitudes along the way. Tushan Kiln, originating in the Song Dynasty with a mix of the ancient Bayu's unique coarsened and plain texture and the Song Dynasty's minimalism aesthetics, combines ancient elegant lifestyle with daily ware. The redesigned kiln has gone into production again, emerging as one of the most representative ancient kilns rooted in the ancient Bayu lifestyle. Notably, it has earned a long list of honorary titles at domestic and international homeware design exhibitions.

According to research, Chongqing Tushan Kiln was built in the middle Northern Song Dynasty, flourished in the Southern Song Dynasty, and went out of production in the early Yuan Dynasty. In other words, it has been lost for nearly 1,000 years. Tushan Kiln Site is located between Nanshan Mountain and Tushan Mountain in Chongqing's Nan'an District and is a historical and cultural site protected at the municipal level. So far, a dazzling array of exquisite Song-era porcelains have been unearthed and now are collected in Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum, Chongqing Nan'an District Cultural Relics Administration Office, and other organizations.

Most of the porcelains unearthed at the Tushan Kiln site are characterized by black and brown glaze and remarkably diverse patterns and colors. Notably, there are brown, green, black, blue, and other colors. "Black glaze modulation," which is hailed as the "enigmatic craftsmanship from the Orient," is a unique gem of Tushan Kiln.

The existential Tushan Kiln site is a unique, large kiln group in Southwest China. There are 12 kiln sites, including Miaozigang, Xiaowan, and Jumuwan in Nanshan Mountain, Nan'an District. So far, Xiaowan is still home to three complete kiln sites, all of which are historical and cultural sites protected at the municipal level.

Confirmed by some cultural relics experts, Tushan Kiln is located in Tushan Lake, Huangjueya Town, Nan'an District, with a length of about 10 kilometers from east to west and a total of more than ten remains. As early as the 1930s, U.S. Scholar Mr. David Crockett Graham, the first curator of the West China Union University Museum (present-day Sichuan University Museum), investigated the site and named it "Chongqing Kiln Construction Site."

From the perspective of "design and recreation," Tushan Kiln's cultural creative brand takes root in the time-honored culture of Tushan Kiln and tries to carry forward and inject new vitality into the lifestyle carried by Tushan Kiln. While respecting the exquisite craftsmanship and cultural richness of original antiques, it strives to give a contemporary take on the Song-era aesthetics with modern aesthetic design, thereby striking a balance between artistry and functionality.

Newly launched in 2021, its "Qing Shan Lv Shui" product series has won a bronze medal at the 2021 “Chongqing Gifts” Cultural Creative Product Exhibition and was selected among foreign affairs gifts. Notably, the product series is a set of redesigned porcelain cups with mountain and water patterns.

Moreover, its "Feng Song" Product Series is also inspired by the time-honored antiques of Tushan Kiln. Rooted in the Song-era whisking tea ware discovered in Tushan Kiln, it tries to capture the representative features and highlights of the antiques to carry forward the quintessence of Tushan Kiln and introduce more people to the beauty of the thousand-year-old Song-era aesthetics. Meanwhile, it adds modern design language to inspire pure and minimalist imagination.
