The 816 Project – Exploring the Largest Known Artificial Cavern in the World |Centennial Milestones⑦

By JAMES ALEXANDER|Aug 11,2021

The 816 Project now welcomes hordes of tourists at Baitao Town alongside the Wu River banks in Fuling. Baitao has seen a transformation from a town blanketed in secrecy to a famous tourist destination, as the 816 Project has now captured the imagination of countless people.

In the 1960s, tens of thousands of young patriots came here from all over the country. They began the 18-year-long process of excavating the most enormous artificial cavern in the world inside Jinzi Mountain.

On walking into the 816 Project today, decades later, visitors can relive that era of passionate fervor thanks to the restored sections and flashing lights.

Countless individuals selflessly devoted their energy for the sake of national security and independence in those difficult years, as they bravely contributed to the innovative spirit behind Third Front Construction through a united effort.
