Road-Rail Cable-Stayed Bridge with Longest Span Worldwide to Open in SW China

Chongqing- The last deck slab of Chongqing Baijusi Yangtze River Bridge, the road-rail cable-stayed bridge with the world’s longest span, was successfully hoisted on September 1, marking an important step towards the bridge’s opening to traffic at the end of the year.

Jointly invested by Chongqing City Investment Group and the CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company Ltd., the bridge was conducted by Chongqing Housing and Urban-Rural Construction Commission.

Spanning the Yangtze River, the Baijusi Yangtze River Bridge PPP Project connects the Taiyanggang Interchange at Banan District and the Chengjiage Interchange at Dadukou District, from east to west, with a full length of 3.7 kilometers. The project consists of the east approach road of the Taiyanggang Interchange, the Baijusi Yangtze River Bridge, and the Chengjiage interchange.

Among them, the Baijusi Yangtze River Bridge has a total length of 1384 meters and a main span of 660 meters. It serves as a cable-stayed bridge and a steel truss girder for both public and rail use, with the largest span in the world.

According to Deng Yu, Bridge Specialty and Deputy Chief Engineer of T.Y. Lin International China, the design unit of Baijusi Yangtze River Bridge, mountains and rivers play a major part of Chongqing, and the bridge was designed to integrate the concept of “water.”

He said, while normal towers of cable-stayed bridges are triangular or gate-shaped, the tower of Baijusi Yangtze River Bridge is shaped like a drop of water. Supporting the bridge expresses the concept of “a drop of water merges into the Yangtze River,” implying the struggling spirit of Chongqing citizens, that is, drops of water outwear the stone.

According to the relevant staff from the CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company Ltd., after the bridge is hoisted, the subsidiary facilities, including paving bridge deck and other follow-up construction, will be conducted.

The bridge is expected to be completed and opened to traffic at the end of this year. The public will then be able to drive from Dadukou District to Nanquan at Banan District in approximately 10 minutes.

Baijusi Yangtze River Bridge is a control node project across the Yangtze River on the seven horizontal lines of Chongqing. After the completion of the bridge, it will become an important channel connecting the Longzhou Bay area at Banan District and the Yangtze River Culture and Art Bay area.

The bridge will make it easier for the public to travel, and it will become another beautiful new landmark to Chongqing, said Chongqing Housing and Urban-Rural Construction Commission.
