Chongqing-"We suggest that Chongqing seize the opportunities presented by the transformation of the intelligent connected vehicles of the automobile industry, and actively build the related industrial ecology, which will help the automobile industry to grow stronger, achieve transformation and upgrades, and become a new business card for the city."

Frank Meng, chairman of Qualcomm China, put forward his suggestions during the 16th Annual Meeting of the Chongqing Mayor's International Economic Advisory (CMIA).

Moving towards intelligent connected vehicles

When prompted on the future direction of automobile manufacturing in Chongqing, he emphasized the city should follow the examples of Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen in the transformation towards intelligent connected vehicles.

"At present, the four trends towards modernization are characterized by intelligence, connectivity, electrification, and sharing, which have become the inevitable path for transformation and upgrades in the automotive industry, which is undergoing wholesale and rapid changes worldwide," noted Meng in a written interview.

He believed Chongqing has strong foundations in the automobile, electronic information, and software industries.

New space for differentiated competition

The CMIA is themed on Good tales of two cities- building the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle: opportunities and challenges, with a focus on the modern industrial system, digitized and intelligent development, as well as green development.

Frank Meng explained the opportunities and challenges that Chongqing will encounter throughout development and how enterprises can benefit from the opportunities that arise.

"This region has a vast and long-standing industrial manufacturing base, so there are many opportunities set to be gained through the development of intelligent networked vehicles."

This May, Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality signed a strategic cooperation agreement for coordinated development in the automotive industry in the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, which has opened up new space for coordinated development in the auto industry."

He added that in terms of automobile industry development in Chongqing, there are strong foundations and kinetic energy in the electronic information industry, which has helped form a relatively complete supporting system for vehicle production.

From the perspective of related industries, Chongqing has proven to be an important base for industry clusters in the fields of electronic information and software in China. Therefore, Chongqing has the right foundations and ability for development in the intelligent networked automobile industry.

"We believe that Chongqing should formulate a distinctive development path and target advantages link layout for the intelligent networked automobile industry, in order to form a differentiated competition model as opposed to other cities," explained Meng.

Chongqing strives to create a modern international city based on intelligent, green, and cultural development. He explained how he believes Chongqing should deepen exchange and cooperation with famous multinational companies.

"This latest revolution in science and technology, as well as industrial transformation, have provided Chongqing with new possibilities for open economic development. In particular, new industry trends such as the industrial internet and intelligently connected automobiles driven by 5G will be integrated into the traditional manufacturing industry."

Frank Meng also described how Qualcomm has actively supported the implementation and realization of big data intelligence in Chongqing and has assisted the development of key industries such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, automotive electronics, and intelligent networked vehicles.

"In the context of 5G empowerment and industrial transformation, we will join hands with the industrial ecology and expand opportunities for high-quality development for the Chongqing economy."
