During the seven-day National Day holiday in 2021, the A-class tourist attractions in Chongqing received a total of 12.73 million visitors, an increase of 31.2% and 2.6%, respectively, over 2020 and 2019. During the holiday, Chongqing launched more than 350 scenic spots, more than 180 tourism routes, planned and held numerous festival activities, and implemented ticket concessions to meet and serve the diversified needs of tourists.
In terms of urban tourism, Mexin Wine Town received 300,000 visitors, an increase of 40% over 2020, reaching the level of the same period in 2019; Hongyadong Folk Custom Scene Area received 510,000 visitors, an increase of 19.57% over 2020 and a recovery of 62.8% over 2019; Ciqikou Scenic Area received 452,000 visitors, an increase of 39.03% over 2020 and over 83.3% recovery from 2019; Chongqing Zoo received 235,000 visitors, an increase of 27% from 2020 and a 73% recovery from 2019.
In terms of 5A fine scenic areas, Qianjiang Zhuoshui Scenic Area received 246,000 visitors, an increase of 69.5% over 2020 and 27.4% over 2019; Wulong Karst Scenic Area received 174,000 visitors, an increase of 40% over 2020 and a recovery of 79% over 2019; Yunyang Longgang Scenic Area received 96,000 visitors, an increase of 229.1% over 2020 and 2.3% over 2019. Hongyan red tourism is popular. Chongqing Hongyan Alliance received 303,000 visitors, an increase of 89.81% compared to 2020 and a recovery of 80.74% compared to 2019; among them, Gele Mountain Martyrs’ Cemetery received 242,000 visitors, an increase of 350.3% compared to 2020 and a recovery of 84.5% compared to 2019.
A total of 111 performances were held during the National Day holiday, with an audience of 29,622 people. Theaters such as the Chongqing Center of Sichuan Opera, Chongqing Guotai Art Center, and the Shancheng Folk Art Hall held a variety of performances with exciting content, including Sichuan Opera The Strange Adventures of Master Qiao and folk culture performance The Art of Mountain City in Memory. An immersive ballet, The Nutcracker, created by Chongqing Ballet Theater and the OCT Happy Valley scenic area, was staged at the Caesar Palace Theatre in Chongqing Happy Valley.
Meanwhile, the 13th Western China Animation Cultural Festival was successfully held in Bishan District from 30 September to 4 October 2021, with 50 exhibitors, attracting 30,000 visitors from 20 provinces and cities across China. The Chongqing Art Museum held the Light of the Times – The Fifth Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition, which received a total of 14,303 visitors. The Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts held a nationwide touring exhibition of The Stage Achievements of the “Great Series of Chinese Paintings Through the Ages,” which received 17,000 visitors.
Forty-three public libraries and 41 cultural centers were open for free. Three hundred seven thousand visits were made to public libraries at all levels, with a total of 736,000 online services; 113,000 visits were made to cultural centers, with 496,000 online services; 4,067 mass cultural activities (including online) were held, with 846,000 people participating in the activities, including 816,000 online.
Furthermore, museums in Chongqing launched 64 high-quality exhibitions and 41 social education activities, with the theme of promoting patriotism and inheriting traditional Chinese culture. Chongqing China, Three Gorges Museum, launched an exhibition of Qi Baishi’s works during the war. The Chongqing Hongyan Revolutionary History Museum launched an exhibition entitled “The Spirit of Hongyan Forever,” and the Chongqing Natural History Museum held several interactive exhibitions. During the seven-day National Day holiday, the city’s museums received a total of 1.248 million visitors.
The live-action performances were well received. Wulong, Zhongxian, and Fengjie presented the large-scale landscape live-action performances Impression of Wulong, The Chaotic Three Kingdoms, and Return to the Three Gorges, respectively, with a total of 20 performances over the seven days, receiving nearly 25,000 people and earning over 2.7 million yuan. The historical play Chongqing, 1949, staged in Shapingba’s Ciqikou Ancient Town, had 15 performances, with 14,500 audience members and revenue of 2.02 million yuan. Tongliang, the hometown of dragon lanterns and dragon dances, insisted on presenting a special National Day dragon dance show for citizens and visitors at the Dragon Dance Square by Xuantian Lake from the first day of the National Day holiday.
