The Cost of Living in China | Alex in the City

By GAOWEI ZHANGALEX REPORTERFYXUANQI YUAN|Jan 24,2022

Chongqing- In Episode 3 of "Alex in the City," I share my experience visiting a local supermarket with international goods.

Can I find what I need in China? Is the supermarket more expensive? Let's find out as we go on this shopping adventure together in Chongqing.

As I communicate with my friends overseas, they tell me prices are starting to skyrocket. Soaring inflation is outstripping the most significant increase in worker wages in decades, and inflation is causing prices on everything from fruit to durable goods to explode.

"Prices have soared by their fastest rate for 30 years as inflation hit 5.4%, its highest since 1992", according to Helia Ebrahimi, an Economics Correspondent with Channel 4 news located in the United Kingdom. She goes on to say, "It's been fuelled by rising food prices along with soaring energy bills, and that, say experts, is only likely to get worse. It's not just families left struggling to get by, as rising costs are yet another challenge for businesses already hard hit by the pandemic."

What will 2022 bring us to China? Let's find out what the cost of living is like in one of China's largest mega-cities, Chongqing.

Editor's Note

My name is Alex, and I have recently moved to Chongqing, China. I was born in Canada, but I have always been interested in China. The population of Chongqing is similar to that of my country. Some people might think that a vlogger is just a person talking about him or herself, and maybe that's how it was many years ago. Some vloggers create educational content, and others talk about their political views or experiences. I try to inspire and motivate people to change their perceptions about China.

I will not only show you China, but I will show you my accomplishments and my struggles. Join me as we explore China together.
