Chongqing- The Artificial Intelligence Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was based in the Western (Chongqing) Science City, according to the Chongqing Science & Technology Innovation Bureau in High-Tech Industry Development Zone on March 28.

Welcoming Fields medalists

The Institute, led by Professor Jin Shi, President of the Institute of Natural Sciences of SJTU, will pool more than 30 expert teams with academic influence at home and abroad. Their research areas cover dozens of disciplinary systems, including computational and applied mathematics, soft matter dynamics, image processing, partial differential equations, probability theory and mathematical statistics, and computational neuroscience.

In the future, a number of academic masters with international influence, such as Fields Medal winners and members of academies of science in Europe, America, and other developed countries, will be invited to Chongqing.

Every year, they will be holding high-level academic activities, leading cutting-edge international research, exploring mechanisms to attract and nurture talents, and pooling premium talents to develop artificial intelligence (AI) in Chongqing.

The Fields Medal, an international prize in mathematics established at the request of Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields, was first awarded in 1936. It is one of the highest international prizes in mathematics and is also known as the "Nobel Prize in Mathematics" because the Nobel Prize does not set a prize for mathematics.

World-class academic platform

Focusing on the application of AI in industrial software, smart manufacturing, smart medicine, smart drugs, smart humanities and arts, smart education, and other fields, the Artificial Intelligence Institute will foster collaborative innovation platforms, including research and development centers, key laboratories, and engineering technology research centers with regional characteristics and industrial support capabilities.

"The Artificial Intelligence Institute will be built as a platform for cooperation among enterprises, universities and research institutions, technology incubation centers, and results in transformation, academic exchange, and talent attraction and cultivation," said Ying Wenjun, head of the Artificial Intelligence Institute and professor at the Institute of Natural Sciences of SJTU.

It strives to solve scientific and application problems of great significance to Chongqing's industrial development, carrying out results transformation and enterprise cultivation, and promoting the development of AI technology innovation and industrial integration, said Ying.

This year, the Artificial Intelligence Institute will launch an industrial software research center, smart drug research and development center, and a comprehensive artificial intelligence research center application.

It is also expected to launch a smart manufacturing research center and smart medical innovation center, aiming to help the Western (Chongqing) Science City to build a center of the world's top applied mathematics and artificial intelligence talents, world-class academic and research collaborative innovation academic highlands for collaborative innovation of industries, universities, and research institutes.

Up to now, the Western (Chongqing) Science City has signed 36 cooperation projects with universities, research institutes, and innovative enterprises in science and technology innovation, of which 17 projects have been put into use, and 13 projects are under construction, and six projects are about to land.
