By SHIHAN YANG|Jun 05,2022

Chongqing- "Wow, this face-changing is really cool!" "The costumes are beautiful, and the different characters wear clothes with their own characteristics." On June 3, Chongqing Sichuan Opera Art Center welcomed a group of special visitors.

Following the "Faces of Chinese Opera" Chongqing-ASEAN Youth Theatre Exchange Initiative, teachers and students from KL International School of Chongqing Bashu experienced the unique charm of Sichuan Opera, a traditional Chinese opera genre, up close.

"Sichuan opera has a long history, inheriting the rich traditions of Chinese traditional performance and the culture of Sichuan. Over the years, Sichuan opera has continued to develop and innovate, and has now become a valuable treasure in China's intangible cultural heritage." While listening to the introduction of a guide, the students and teachers visited the Sichuan Opera Museum to learn about the history, status quo, and the development of Sichuan Opera.

A record in 1936 attracted the attention of foreign visitors. It was recorded when Sichuan opera was performed in Shanghai, with the repertoire of many veteran Sichuan opera artists.

The most interesting part of the museum was the Sichuan opera costumes. The wide variety of costumes not only shows the identity and age of the characters, but also demonstrates Chinese textile, design, tailoring skills, and exquisite embroidery techniques.

After visiting the Sichuan Opera Museum, the students and teachers then interacted with the Sichuan Opera performers and watched the classic play The Legend of the White Snake.

"Sichuan opera is simply cool, both in the costumes the actors wear and in the movement skills they demonstrate during the performance." Escher, a student at KL International School of Chongqing Bashu, said he has always loved Sichuan Opera's "Face Changing" and found many other interesting points after learning more about it this time.

"This is a very good opportunity for me and my students to enjoy Sichuan opera up close and see the beauty of traditional Chinese culture. It is expected that in the follow-up activities of the Faces of Chinese Opera' Chongqing-ASEAN Youth Theatre Exchange Initiative, more students will be able to get in touch with the traditional Chinese culture of Sichuan opera," said Dino Gisiano, Principal of KL International School of Chongqing Bashu.
