Xueyu Cave: “young girl” among karst caves

Located on the steep rock wall of Longhe Canyon, Xueyu Cave (lit. Snow Jade Cave) owns 80% of the stalactites of “white as snow and pure as jade.” That is why it was named “Xueyu Cave” by Professor Zhu Xuewen, Chairman of the Geological Association of China’s Speleology Committee.

In 2003, Xueyu Cave was officially confirmed as the first speleological science popularization base and the first karst cave observatory in China. In 2005, the cave was rated as “the most beautiful cave for tourism in China” by the authoritative domestic magazine — Chinese National Geography. According to the magazine, in the Xueyu Cave, there are “tower coral clusters” with the largest number and scale, the crystal clear “King of Stone Flag” with the thinnest and longest edge, a “shield” clean as ice and pure as snow, with a diameter of four meters, and the snow-white 2.5-meter-long “King of Soda Straw.”

Shuanggui Mountain: a mountain of history and culture

Shuanggui Mountain is 401 meters above sea level, with peaks looking like a set of pen holders. In the fourth year of Jiayou in the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 1059), Su Xun, Su Shi, and Su Zhe went to Bianjing (now Kaifeng City in Henan Province). When they passed Fengdu, they visited Shuanggui Mountain and left beautiful poems and relative legends.

The Huguo Pavilion is next to the Enlai Pavilion, which is the site of Liu Bocheng’s battle against Yuan Shikai in the 5th year of the Republic of China (1916). Because Huguo’s Chinese pronunciation is the same as “to protect the country” in English, the pavilion’s name is used in honor of Liu Bocheng. Located at the east end of the top of the mountain, Liangyuan Pavilion was built to commemorate the love between Qi Baishi, a master of traditional Chinese painting, and Hu Baozhu, a lady from Fengdu. Liangyuan means good connection and fated encounter, so the word is usually used to mark a positive relationship. The Helong Pavilion was built to commemorate the garrison of Fengdu in the 12th year of the Republic of China (1923), when He Long was the commander of the garrison brigade of the Eastern Sichuan Border Defense Army. The Confucian Temple is one of the main buildings on Shuanggui Mountain, with a line-carved tablet by Wu Daozi of the Tang Dynasty on the left and the Zhen Xie Building (a building used to suppress evil) on the right.
