The Consulate General of Myanmar Opened in SW China's Chongqing

Chongqing – The Consulate General of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Chongqing officially opened on July 12, injecting impetus into Chongqing-Myanmar's friendly interactions and cooperation.

Myanmar Ambassador to China U Myo Thant Pe made the opening speech, "The opening of Myanmar Consulate-General is one of the remarkable milestones in the history of the bilateral relations between Myanmar and China."

"I am confident that Myanmar Consulate General in Chongqing will definitely serve as the important pillar to connect and strengthen the ties and cooperation between Southwestern part of China and Myanmar," added Ambassador.

"This Consulate General in Chongqing is the third consulate Myanmar has set up in the Chinese mainland, after those in Kunming and Nanning, which will help strengthen regional exchanges and cooperation between our two countries. It is expected to upgrade Myanmar's consular services in China and enrich the connotation of the China-Myanmar community of shared future," said Wei Xiaodong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Consular Affairs.

Dan Yanzheng, Vice Mayor of Chongqing Municipal People's Government,  said, "China-Myanmar comprehensive strategic partnership has been further advanced in recent years. In such a context, Chongqing and Myanmar have engaged in the Belt and Road cooperation in an all-around way, with the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC) as a key enabler. Chongqing and Myanmar have deepened cooperation which yielded fruitful results in two-way investment, corridor construction, culture and tourism, education and training, etc."

"The Chongqing Municipal Government will strongly support the work of the Myanmar Consulate General in Chongqing to sustain exchanges between Chongqing and Myanmar. We will seize this opportunity to actively engage in the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) mechanism by fully leveraging our geographic location advantages," he added.

The consular district of the Myanmar Consulate General in Chongqing includes Chongqing Municipality, Sichuan Province, and Hubei Province, providing business, cultural, visa, and consular protection services.

The Chongqing Municipal Commission of Culture and Tourism and the General Department of the National Hotel and Tourism Ministry of Myanmar signed and exchanged the Memorandum for Tourism Cooperation. The Myanmar Jewelry Exhibition and the Myanmar Commodities Exhibition opened at the ceremony.

Recent exchanges between Chongqing and Myanmar

On May 23, the first international freight train linking Chongqing and Lincang in southwestern China with Myanmar set off from the Yuzui Station in Liangjiang New Area. It is expected further optimize the global logistics mode and route in the inland areas of western China to many ports in the Middle East and Europe.

In 2021, the Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Dialogue Relations and the sixth Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting was held on June 7 to 8 in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.

On September 28, 2020, Myanmar Ambassador to China U Myo Thant Pe visited Chongqing to learn Chongqing's advantages in various aspects. This move has paved the road to deeper cooperation and exchange between Chongqing and Myanmar in economies, trade, logistics, humanities, tourism, and education.
