Unlike traditional communication in English, the online communication course with the Singapore primary school adopted “one class to one class communication in both Chinese and English” mode that enabled every student to show themselves and participate confidently using their mother language. The new mode also met the class goal of mutual learning between schools from two countries.

During the activity, students from both schools started by sharing their school life on the topic of “ A Day In School ”through PPT, videos, and narrations. Then students from Singapore Admiralty Primary School presented places of interest, folk customs, and daily life in Singapore and played the Chinese traditional music instrument Guzhen, played piano, performed martial arts, Malay dance, poem recitation, and so forth to Chinese students. Meanwhile, Nankai Primary School students played traditional Chinese music instruments, Suona and Dulcimer, performed traditional Chinese poem recitation, sang in the chorus, and so forth.

This rich “Internet plus international cultural communication” activity deepened friendship among students from both schools and strengthened mutual understanding and learning of two different cultures. The enthusiasm of students from Nankai Primary School to carry forward Chinese traditional culture and tell stories about China, Chongqing, and Nankai Primary School deeply touched students and teachers from Singapore Admiralty Primary School, and their excellent performances won applause from them. Liu Quanshan, a student from Class1, Grade 3 of Chongqing Nankai Primary School, played Chinese traditional music “Good Messages” with the dulcimer. She said this activity made her feel confident in showing and expressing herself. She had learned to play dulcimer for one year and a half, and she hoped everyone would feel happy after listening to her music.

According to the introduction, Nankai Primary School is the experimental school for international cultural and people-to-people exchanges in Shapingba District. International communication with schools from other countries like Singapore will cultivate students for the creation of a new era with an international outlook and foster young generations with ideals, ability, and a strong sense of responsibility. On the one hand, the school wants students to take root in Chinese culture and master the ability to tell China’s stories well; on the other hand; it wants students to learn culture and life of other countries so that they can contribute to building a community with a shared future for humanity, said the principal of Nankai Primary School, Tang Daqin. He said a series of communication courses would be carried out with primary schools from the Belt and Road countries.
