People Leave Home as Holiday Ends, Trunks Loaded with Food and Love

By YAN DENG|Jan 31,2023

Chongqing - As the Spring Festival holiday ends and people head back to work away from home, their trunks are unexpectedly loaded with food and agricultural products from home.

"Every time I go home, my parents fill the trunk with various bags, emphasizing that 'you can't buy these outside.' What you can't buy is the taste of home and the love of your family. "said Ms. Zhou, a Chongqing resident.

One of the most favored vegetables in Chongqing is pea tips, which are even more flavorful, crisp, and tender when just picked from the ground. The two bags of pea tips in the trunk are what Ms. Chen is most worried about today. "My father picked this in the field early in the morning. We put the pea tips in the refrigerator as soon as we got home, and the two large bags weighing around 1.5 kilograms is enough for a few days."

Ms. Zhou, from Linshui County in Sichuan Province, has a crate of freshly harvested oranges in her trunk. "I picked them from the tree next to the old house the day I arrived home. It was quite tasty. The orange trees were tall, and some couldn't be taken. My family trimmed down the higher branches to get more." Ms. Zhou added that every year, the family keeps the oranges waiting for them to select when they return.

In Ms. Chen's trunk are potatoes that have just been picked. Ms. Zhou returned with freshly slaughtered domestic fowl and home-grown radishes and cabbage. Those are must-have goods for the return trip's trunk. They are grown and raised at home and taste better than store-bought varieties.

Mr. Xiong's hometown is Guangyuan City, Sichuan Province. In the trunk of his car, there is a large pot of pickles exclusively made by his mother. "Since I went to college, I will take a lot when I leave home during the Spring Festival. I have tried other pickles before, but they are not as delicious as my mother's, which is the taste of home for me."

"During the Spring Festival, I returned to my hometown, Langzhong City, Sichuan Province. The trunk was filled with sausages and bacon made by my mother. The sausages made by my mother are unique, and other sausages are not as good as hers," said Mr. Kong, who works in Yubei District in Chongqing.

People's trunks are filled with handmade sausage and bacon, pickled vegetables and bean paste, and even homemade glutinous rice ball dumplings. Although the goods are ordinary, they have special meaning. Even if you travel to the ends of the planet, the home flavor and your family's affection will always be with you.

The full trunks contain specialties made by parents which carry warm family affection and unforgettable nostalgia.
