In Pics: National Exhibition Showcases Unique Aesthetics of Chinese Comics on Shelf

By YAN DENG|Feb 21,2023

Chongqing - Chongqing Art Museum is set to host the National Comic Strip on Shelf Exhibition (Chongqing Station), a communication and promotion project funded by the National Art Fund. The exhibition, which will run from February 22 to March 12, will showcase the diverse expressions of the painting’s forms through various types of artwork, including ink, oil, printmaking, watercolor, and mixed media.

Comics On Shelf, a relatively new art form, has emerged in recent years. It combines traditional comic strips' literary and sequential characteristics with the independence and artistry of paintings on shelves. Through multiple continuous images, creators express their personal life experiences, history, and social events, fully embodying the dual attributes of comic on-shelf narration and aesthetics.

The exhibition’s works adhere to the principle of being “deeply rooted in the life and the people.” This reflects the realistic development of contemporary Chinese comic art while presenting the artists’ aesthetic ideals from a diverse perspective.

The event is expected to promote the development of national and regional culture and play an active role in promoting the prosperity and development of Comics On Shelf. Admission to the exhibition is free to the public.
