Designer Landmarks③ - Twisty Facade Pushes Architectural Limits in Chongqing

By JAMES ALEXANDERYILING WANGSHIHAN YANG|Mar 16,2023

Chongqing- The skyline and architecture of Chongqing rival the most spectacular worldwide, augmented only more greatly by the dramatic view of mighty rivers flowing between mountains and past steep riverbanks running for miles along the built-up shores.

However, the unsuspecting visitor may be unaware that many iconic structures in this international metropolis saw the deep involvement of British architectural firms in the design stage, who successfully enhanced the construction projects with innovative concepts which incorporate aesthetic value, green features, and the integration of mass transit in order to drive the revitalization of former rustbelt sites.

In this unique five-part video series produced in collaboration with the UK Consulate General in Chongqing, we share the inside story behind some of the most iconic buildings that grace the cityscape and how top British architectural firms played a vital role in their popular and commercial success thanks to their creative designs and pioneering concepts.

Gaoke Office Tower

Gaoke Office Tower, located in the Chongqing High Tech Zone, is a signature project designed by the British firm Aedas, who were successfully awarded the project back in 2015, following which they resolved to make an architectural statement to reflect the spirit of innovation and energy showcased by the district.

The result was a unique and elegant twisting form that challenged modern design technology to the limit, and the now-completed tower currently holds the title of the world’s curviest building.

In line with high-tech themes, the Gaoke Office Tower assumes the central position within a solar layout, with surrounding developments named after planets like Mercury, Jupiter, and Neptune.

At the same time, careful consideration was paid to strike the right balance with the urban environment so that it doesn’t overly impose on the field of vision, such as Zhaomu Mountain in the background.

In addition, the project created plenty of space for outdoor public activities, and the now iconic landmark sets off beautifully against the city lights come nighttime, creating yet another unique sight in this metropolis of mountains and rivers.
