Chongqing - The skyline and architecture of Chongqing rival amongst the most spectacular worldwide, augmented only more greatly by the dramatic view of mighty rivers flowing between mountains and past steep riverbanks running for miles along the built-up shores.

However, the unsuspecting visitor may be unaware that many iconic structures in this international metropolis saw the deep involvement of British architectural firms in the design stage, who successfully enhanced the construction projects with innovative concepts which incorporate aesthetic value, green features, and the integration of mass transit to driving the revitalization of former rustbelt sites.

In this unique five-part video series produced in collaboration with the UK Consulate General in Chongqing, we share the inside story behind some of the most iconic buildings that grace the cityscape and how top British architectural firms played a vital role in their popular and commercial success thanks to their creative designs and pioneering concepts. 

Jinsha Paradise Walk

Transport-orientated developments can be regarded as important nodes ensuring the smooth flow of lifeblood through the veins of a city. In Chongqing, the Shapingba Railway Integrated Hub is the first TOD project nationwide to combine high-speed rail, subways, buses, and taxi ranks with a major shopping complex.

Jinsha Paradise Walk is a large commercial mall constructed by the Chinese property developer Longfor, and during the early planning stage, the British company Savills played an important role in this project that has greatly enhanced the overall commercial value of the Three Gorges Square CBD in Shapingba District.

Savills proposed integrating the station and city in order to revitalize this old district, renowned for its culture and bygone porcelain trade. The complex has also provided an effective link between the northern and southern halves of the district, formerly separated by tracks forming part of the Chengdu-Chongqing railway.

As a result, Jinsha Paradise Walk has created new consumption scenarios like shopping, entertainment, interaction, and tourism, which have revitalized the consumer base, while renowned brands have moved in to open their first stores. These advantages, coupled with consumers absorbed by the high-speed rail network, have reshaped the business scene, as TOD and commercial space create a seamless flow economy.
