Chongqing - Chongqing is set to host the Fifth Western China International Fair for Investment and Trade (WCIFIT) from May 18 to 21. Malaysia is the Guest Country of Honor for this edition, and China's Sichuan and Gansu provinces are the honored provinces.
The choice of guests of honor at a conference is of significant importance. How do they earn this honor, and what unique characteristics do they possess?
Malaysia is Chongqing's second-largest trading partner among ASEAN countries. "The guest country must have close ties with Chongqing, and Malaysia fulfills this condition," said an official of the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Commerce.
Earlier this year, when Chongqing organized tours to expand local enterprises' international markets, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia was the first stop. Chongqing and Malaysia inked cooperation agreements worth over 16 million U.S. dollars, encompassing sectors such as machinery, hardware, automotive and motorcycle, and access control systems.
Furthermore, both sides collaborated to enhance the transport services of the New International Land-sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC) connecting Malaysia, supporting the development of Malaysia's Port Klang into the second-largest international transit shipping center after the Port of Singapore.
Data from 2022 shows that Chongqing's foreign trade with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) reached 126.63 billion yuan (about 18.18 billion U.S. dollars), with Malaysia being Chongqing's second-largest trading partner among ASEAN countries, accounting for nearly 20%.
Chongqing primarily imports integrated circuits and solid-state hard drives from Malaysia and exports notebook computers, printed circuits, and smartphones, all of which are closely tied to Chongqing's competitive industries.
Since the upgrade of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle to a national strategy, social exchanges between Sichuan and Chongqing have grown increasingly close.
Sichuan has been the guest province since the 2nd WCIFIT, consistently bringing a variety of highlights to the fair. Last year, for instance, Sichuan arranged a 600-square-meter exhibition hall that showcased over 30 products, including industry-first large-load, long-endurance pure electric power composite wing drones, and other technological products.
Similarly, Gansu province has been an active participant in the WCIFIT. As one of the earliest regions to support the joint construction of the ILSTC, Gansu has made the ILSTC one of the themes of its exhibitions at the fair.
This year, Gansu will organize over 100 leading enterprises to showcase sectors such as electronic information, semiconductor materials, digital economy, biomedicine, clean energy, and channel logistics.
