Chongqing - Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized Chinese civilization's long and continuous history in his letter of congratulations to the first Forum on Building up China's Cultural Strength in Shenzhen on June 7.

Xi stated that a comprehensive and profound understanding of this history is essential for effectively promoting the creative transformation and development of fine traditional Chinese culture and advancing modern Chinese civilization.

"Traditional crafts and cultural heritage are increasingly revealing their unique social value in the context of building a strong cultural country," said Professor Xie Yaping, Vice Chairman of the Chongqing Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Chairman of the Chongqing Folk Artists Association, and Dean of the Graduate School of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.

She added, "By combining the industrialization of traditional cultural resources with the process of cultural industrialization, we can achieve the sustainable development of these precious cultural heritages."

The Chongqing Pavilion at the 19th China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair, showcased its distinct cultural and creative products, including iconic Dazu Rock Carvings, exquisite Miao ethnic costumes, and Liangping Woodblock paintings. This exhibition provided new opportunities for Chongqing's traditional crafts and cultural heritage.

Big data technology pushes the sustainable development of cultural heritage

Big data technology plays a significant role in driving the sustainable development of cultural heritage. According to Professor Xie, some traditional handicraft industries have successfully established sound industrial mechanisms, embracing modern production models and transforming their value systems to achieve sustainable development.

However, most traditional crafts remain in a state of high consumption and low-value production, with limited innovation capabilities and industrial levels. It is crucial for traditional crafts to shift from "outdated techniques" to "advanced technologies" through knowledge innovation.

Professor Xie explained that multiple consumer-oriented aspects could be established by innovatively interpreting traditional crafts' behavior, language, and symbolic values. This transformation allows traditional crafts to transcend mere material products and become cultural content with spiritual significance.

"We can also combine big data technology with the preservation of traditional cultural resources to lead the innovative development of China's cultural industry," added Professor Xie.

Big data technology provides a convenient pathway for capitalizing on, intellectualizing, industrializing, and sharing traditional culture. It enables the adoption of modern industrial models and value systems, thereby facilitating the creation of diverse products that meet aesthetic and functional needs.

"We can draw inspiration from the advanced experiences of the United States in big data technology and cultural innovation," suggested Professor Xie. For example, she highlighted the work of Andrew Tallon, an architectural and art historian at Vassar College in the United States, who utilized laser scanning and 3D modeling techniques to document a billion data points for the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. These data-driven achievements offer possibilities for monument reconstruction and virtual expansion.

Branding of artisans' craftsmanship should be widely respected

The branding of artisans' craftsmanship should be widely respected. Professor Xie emphasized the need to innovate cultural products' creation mechanisms and value orientations based on market demand. She believes that establishing a comprehensive and efficient platform for protecting intellectual property rights in craftsmanship and a global platform for cultural exchanges is crucial for fostering increased communication and innovation. It is important to widely recognize and respect the creative autonomy of artisans and the branding of their craftsmanship.

In terms of cultivating audiences, the interaction and collaboration between social and public art education in universities play a vital role. Initiatives such as introducing intangible cultural heritage to campuses and facilitating student field trips enhance social practice and theoretical construction integration.

Professor Xie stated that our society, as the largest platform for aesthetic education, should leverage its power of aesthetic popularization, enabling consumers to embrace and actively participate in the mass commentary mechanism.

"In this case, building a virtuous cycle that combines craftsmanship production, product services, mass consumption, craft commentary, and product innovation will gradually drive the prosperity and development of the cultural market," said Professor Xie.
