Bustling Market Day Returns to Flood-Hit Chongqing

By ZHAN CHEN|Jul 08,2023

Shortly after 4 a.m. on July 6, peddlers began to loudly advertise their goods along Hongxing Street in the Wuqiao Sub-district of Wanzhou District. It was a bustling market day, vibrant with the clamor of new arrivals and animated peddlers. Life had sprouted anew on Laojie Street, which was recently impacted by heavy rainfall.

"Once the flood waters have receded, everyone comes onto the streets. Today is market day. I transported my goods from home just after four in the morning," shared Chen Wu, a 58-year-old local resident. Today, he sells "sun-cured tobacco leaves," a local specialty, on Laojie Street.

"The early bird gets the worm! If you arrive early, you secure a prime spot for your stall," he added.

Over the past two days, the Wuqiao Sub-district has been methodically clearing away silt, weeds, trees, and other debris to ensure clean streets and navigable waterways. Thanks to this collaborative effort, Chen easily found a "premium location" for his stall.

Sister Long, a bakery stall owner, sells wheat cakes at the entrance of the Hongxing Kindergarten in Wuqiao Sub-district. Normally, students leaving school and parents picking up their children would always stop by her stall to purchase a wheat cake.

However, today was different. Sister Long finished work before 9:00 a.m. as the wheat cakes had already sold out, and the bustling market day, coupled with a price reduction—a testament to Sister Long's benevolence—contributed to her booming sales.

"I offered a discount of 50 cents for every wheat cake sold. Even though I made less profit than usual, it brought joy to everyone," said Sister Long, a veteran vendor on Laojie Street.

The local residents are like family to her. The rainstorm impacted the lives of the residents to varying degrees. "What I can offer to the community is the assurance of a freshly baked wheat cake available as soon as possible," Sister Long said.

Shoppers weave in and out of Wang Xin's grocery store in the Wuqiao Sub-district. The typical bustle is palpable. The residents' "preferences" for dried salted ducks, pork products, and groceries persist. Amidst the noise of shouting and bargaining, deals are made.

Laojie Street remains home to its vivacious residents and bustling stores, all contributing to the lively atmosphere of the area.
