Nightlife Festival: Over 200 Nighttime Activities Set to Ignite Chongqing

By YUTING CHEN|Jul 08,2023

Chongqing - Themed "Love Chongqing, Embrace the Nightlife," the 2023 Chongqing Nightlife Festival is set to launch on July 12 in the Yuzhong District. The city of Chongqing plans to host over 200 special nighttime events, blending commerce, culture, tourism, and sports. The festival will feature a mix of online and offline interactive activities, as revealed at a press conference on July 5.

The festival aims to diversify nighttime consumption formats, invigorate the atmosphere of nighttime consumption, bolster the development of the nighttime economy, and perpetuate the "Chongqing Never Sleeps" brand.

In the past few decades, Chongqing has become China's largest megacity. Home to 32 million residents, it spans an area the size of South Carolina, transitioning from towering skyscrapers to vast farmland beyond the city center. Chongqing is renowned for its captivating night views and thriving nightlife.

In recent years, Chongqing has endeavored to diversify consumption supply, foster business entities, develop the nighttime economy, and enhance its urban image. Since 2020, Chongqing has consecutively earned the top spot in China's list of ten cities with the most influential nighttime economy for three years running.

Multiple nighttime consumer activities to take place simultaneously

Throughout the 2023 Chongqing Nightlife Festival, a variety of nighttime consumer activities will take place. The festival focuses on consumption trends and explores local characteristics and folk culture to enrich its offerings.

The Fourth China (Chongqing) Nighttime Economy Development Summit will be held during the festival. The summit aims to gather representatives from cities such as Beijing, Chengdu, and Guiyang, as well as industry experts and investors, to explore trends in nighttime economic development collectively.

The 2023 China Nighttime Economy Industry Development Research Report will be unveiled during the summit.

Ele.me, a leading online food delivery platform, plans to set up a virtual night market called "Chongqing Never Sleeps - Ele.me Night Market," providing more than 20 million yuan (about USD 2.76 million) in citywide red envelopes and subsidies.

Douyin, also known as Chinese TikTok and a widely used short-video platform, will launch a significant promotional event called "The Enjoy Life Festival." The festival will feature service providers offering online group-buying discounts and other exciting activities.

"This festival aims to expedite the construction of an internationally recognized nighttime economy cluster and demonstration area," said Peng Heliang, Deputy Director of the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Commerce. "We aim to create a unique urban nightscape, transforming 'Chongqing Never Sleeps' into a global emblem."

For seven consecutive years, Chongqing has successfully held nighttime economy-themed events. These events have played an integral role in cultivating the "Chongqing Never Sleeps" brand and promoting consumption upgrades.
