Chongqing - At the 2023 FISU World University Games, a team of 114 students from various departments at Sichuan International Studies University offered interpreting and translation services for 11 languages, including Japanese, German, and Spanish. Their hospitality, amiable attitudes, professionalism, and outstanding language talents exemplified the confidence and spirit of Chinese youth. It disseminated the voices and tales of Chengdu and Chongqing to the global audience.

Selected from a pool of over 15,000 students, the team provides accompanying language services for various delegations during the event. Additionally, 19 team members have been dedicated to serving at the main information center and the opening ceremony. Arriving in Chengdu on July 10, the team will continue their service and support for an entire month.

 "We have received positive feedback from the head of the delegation"

"The FISU World University Games offer a platform for young individuals both at home and abroad to showcase their talents and pursue their aspirations," stated Gu Jiaying, from Spanish Translation major at SISU. "I am thrilled to utilize my proficiency in Spanish to contribute to this international event, as it also embodies the positive and spirited essence of Chinese youth."

Gu Jiaying works alongside the Uruguay delegation. "Except for the head of the delegation, the other members are not fluent in English, which requires us to provide accompanying language services everywhere," Gu Jiaying explained. As a communication bridge, she ensures meticulous attention to every detail, leading to a busy schedule. "We have received positive feedback from the head of the delegation," Gu Jiaying shared.

Learn from outstanding athletes

On the morning of July 31, Zhang Luping, an accompanying volunteer for the Poland delegation, provided interpretation services for the track and field athletes during their daily training session.

Zhang Luping felt nervous when she was assigned the role of an accompanying volunteer for the Poland delegation. She explained, "As an English major, I was concerned about potential challenges or difficulties communicating with the athletes. However, my worries were quickly alleviated when I first met the delegation. They patiently slowed their speaking speed and repeated the terms for me, which was incredibly reassuring."

From Zhang Luping's perspective, the FISU World University Games provides a valuable opportunity for her to apply her skills and knowledge to practice. Throughout this experience, she became acquainted with Chengdu and formed meaningful connections with university students from various countries. In the following days, she will keep learning from outstanding fellow volunteers and athletes, continuously seeking self-improvement.

Create a cherished memory for overseas delegations

On July 26, Chen Yuting, the accompanying volunteer for the Guatemalan delegation, became busier with the delegation's arrival. As a native of Chengdu and a Spanish Translation major at SISU, she expressed, "I feel fortunate to obtain this hard-won opportunity to volunteer at the FISU University Games." 

"The Guatemalan delegation is comprised of only three members. Since it's their first time visiting China, they need assistance in various aspects, including training and daily life," Chen Yuting explained, "They have shown great interest in Chengdu, so I arranged a half-day tour of the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base this morning, allowing them to experience the enchantment of pandas. Additionally, after the games, they have expressed a desire to immerse themselves in Chengdu's diverse traditional culture."

Engaging in voluntary services provides Chen Yuting with a comprehensive grasp of relevant regulations and a deeper understanding of the operation of an international sports event. "I aspire to complete my tasks with utmost excellence," she expressed, hoping to create cherished memories for overseas delegations.
